Summary: Intentionally crippled, avoid.
Comment: Datel seems to have intentionally crippled the manual code input feature, it was a lot of fun to see some of the unexpected effects of codes you entered yourself. Now you're stuck with what they decide to provide you with (if anything).

Consider that previous versions allowed additions of codes and you'll see that you're paying exactly the same money for a product that Datel has devalued.

Seriously think about it before purchasing this device.

Summary: change of features
Comment: Anyone thinking of purchasing this item please note that the 'add new code' or 'add new game' options have been removed.

I wanted to do just this and was dissapointed by the change. You will have to find an older version if you want this option.

Otherwise it's great fun to blow the dust of some old games you just couldn't finish.

Summary: Its a Cheat System and Freeloader all in one
Comment: This package is a decent cheat system. where you have preloaded (on the disc) cheats for almost everygame. A lot of people think that if you have to cheat at a game then there is no point in trying to play it. But when you got Multi-player games that you have to unlock certain content and you just wanna have a few laughs with your mates as soon as possible what do you do? You use this system to make them available.

Not only that, but it has the ability to be updated. using the supplied Memory Card you can store even more codes for the games that have been released after this cheat system.

But not only that, it has a Freeloader (just like the GameBoy Player Disc) but this freeloader overrides the region lock-out. this disc has already told the Game Cube that the disc is multi region, and when you play a new game. you take out the current disc and replace it with either a Japanese or US game and hey presto you can play these games before they are released here in the UK.

People think that this may cause problems with the Memory Card. but the memory card is just a data storage. It supposed to store the game in a multi-region format anyway so it shouldn't be a problem. It isn't a problem on my Console anyway.

Recommended for anybody who wants to play Japanese or US games on your GC without having to worry about voiding any warranty. And also for all those people who want to unlock all the bonus stuff on multi-player games without having to play the single player modes 27 times a day just to unlock one attacthment or extra level.

Nuff said really

Summary: A mixed bag, really
Comment: Well then, Action Replay for GameCube. Unfortunately, I can't help but feel disappointed with it, which is a real shame as I had owned an Action Replay for the N64. To say that the N64 surpasses this in quality is as big an understatement as saying that the Lord of the Rings films were only averagely good.

Where's the Action Replay Professional hacking facility? What's with the dodgy colours and fonts? And there's something else about it... something about the way it feels. I dunno, the general use of it doesn't feel as smooth as it did in previous incarnations.

It does its job fair enough, hell I'm thankful to it because it means I don't have to sit in front of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for years trying to unlock the hidden Green Hill Zone level, but at the end of the day, half of the fun of it was being able to hack your own codes. I spent hours doing this, finding weird cheats that no-one else had discovered before. With this new version, you just can't, and that is probably why I'm not too chuffed with it.

Buy it if you want a bumper-packed cheats disc with loads of pre-loaded cheats and the ability to input more when they are made. Don't buy this if you were expecting the hacking utility, or want your games to last longer than a week; you'll just be far too tempted to cheat it, thus ruining the sense of achievement you get from completing a game.

Summary: VERY EASY
Comment: This is what we have all been waiting for!!
The ACTION REPLAY system works by temporarily altering the input output signal reader (i read it somewhere, sounds true) and enables cheats designed unoficially by the ACTION REPLAY designers.
Also included is the FREELOADER system which enables you to safely play foreign games on your Gamecube system.
The best cheats system i have ever seen.

Editorial Reviews:

Do you suck at games? Perhaps you want to play US and Japanese games on your GameCube? If so, Datel's Action Replay can solve both of your problems in one fell swoop.

Datel's Action Replay system allows you to cheat your way through any game you want with the minimum of fuss. Just insert the special memory card into your GameCube, stick in the Action Replay disk, and choose from a huge range of pre-loaded cheats. And if what you want isn't pre-loaded you can input new codes from Datel's Web site with just a few button clicks.

But Action Replay isn't just of interest if you're rubbish at games. You can also unlock things like hidden characters, weapons and levels--which is great for combating the recent trend that many multi-player games have of leaving half their features locked until you play the single player mode a hundred times. Sometimes you can even unlock features that the developers didn't want you to see, including previously ditched features and graphics.

On top of all this underhanded chicanery Action Replay also includes all the functionality of Datel's FreeLoader, which means you can run any GameCube game from any country whether you have a US, Japanese or British console (see Product Description below for important technical info). Never again will you have to wait five months for a game to be released in your locale. All-in-all, this is a great package for anyone that's serious about getting the most from their console. --David Jenkins
