Summary: Replacement has failed again after 12 months!
Comment: My first DG834GT failed after about 12 months and, guess what, the replacement Netgear sent me has done the same. I am not impressed, especially as the Netgear WG811T USB adaptor I previously had caused nothing but trouble (kept dropping the internet connection, requiring a cold reboot each time). I have finally binned the router as well, after trying to get the Netgear helpline to sort it out and, after getting me to hold the line for 20 minutes while they thought about it, they cut me off when I was reconnecting the router per their instructions. I have promised myself that I will never buy another Netgear product, and advise you to do the same.

Summary: Good router but with problems
Comment: I was a happy user of a Netgear DG834 for more than 3 years I decided to upgrade it to a wireless version. I used an old Netgear ME201 as a wireless "B" router for my laptop but this had ony WEP encryption available.

I will try to put the comments in a simple way:

Good points

- Set-up is very easy via the web page (less than 2 min to be online)
- has 4 ethernet ports and a lot more via wireless
- very stable unit. The 834 one was online 24h/day since 2004
- does not crash or drop ADSL connection
- easy to update the firwmare

Bad points

- gets hot hot hot so has to be put vertically in an area with some air
- the wireless signal is crap and keeps dropping with the present antena even when in the same room. That is surprising taking into account that with my old refurbished wireless router I got signal everywere.

So my reccomandation are as follows: if you don't care for wireless buy the DG834 model only. If the wireless is critical for you buy a bigger antena or another wireless router
Myself I bought a 9dB 38cm long antenna and I get know the signal from the back garden(>50% signal ).

Summary: Short lifetime - poor deal
Comment: I've used one for about 14 months but it started going dead after a few minutes recently. Cost nearly £100 from PC World to boot. No wired or wireless connectivity and you can't even get into the router setup page once it locks out. They overheat - it's a known problem. Just touch yours and see! See the web - lots of people have the same fault. After weeks of trying Netgear have agreed to replace it, but it's a case of wait and see. Another problem is the WG111T wireless USB dongle which came with it for connecting a non-wireless PC wirelessly. This freezes randomly and locks the PC solid. This also is a known defect - again, just try surfing for it! Am awarding 1 star because you can't select zero, but it's a poor item.

Summary: Recently Just Bought It I'm Impressed
Comment: I just bought a brand new 1 of eBay for £17.50 it was a Sky Broadband version and so it was locked with its custom firmware as I don't use SKY BB I use my own local ISP.

Anyways having to use a guide to flash the firmware to a netgear original and then the latest one I got it all up and running and configured my ISP settings into it with no problems. So far so good and it's nice and fast a lot faster than the dial up ADSL modem I was using that's for sure just need some wireless USB dongles I was looking at the 108g ones will have to do some research on them.

A few tips (if Amazon doesn't mind me putting these)...

I made sure that my wireless connection was also secure using the best secure encryption so it will work with my PS3 some people forget that even if your using wired the wireless part is still transmitting the connection and if its not secure people will bounce off it and that I can guarantee happens I've seen it I do a I.T college course and we've done it.

The Wireless security has 3 encryptions WEP (not very good), WPA-PSK (wi-fi protected pre-shared key) & WEP-802.1x which I am assuming is better security for either 802.1b/g connections. I used the 2nd one as my PS3 supports it & it works also set the Channel to 9 and mode to G & B.

For what I think is best for the encryption key use letters (some in caps lock), numbers and characters right it down first what you think is best 8 - 63 is the min & max and then enter it in and save settings look after your key.

And also for in case the router should erase the settings use the Back-up features to create a back-up of the setting that you can restore.

Summary: Poor lifespan / Not user-friendly
Comment: The ethernet connection was good for just over 1 year and then died.

I personally did not find it easy to install, I actually had to phone the netgear helpline.

It comes with a USD wireless connection which I could not get to work more than 2 metres away from the router.

However, my laptop which was bought with wi-fi capabalities had no trouble connecting via this router even after the ethernet connection died.
