Summary: Superb Camcorder for the money
Comment: This is a wonderful piece of kit.

For less than £180 you get a true widescreen camcorder with digital image stabalising, excellent sound recording, pretty good image quality and all the features you could posibly hope for.

And, whilst it has manual white balance and manual focus and exposure etc. etc, all you really need to do is whack in a MiniDV tape ([..] each for a 60min tape), turn the rocker switch to "Record" mode and hit the white button that lies perfectly under your thumb. It does the rest. The optical zoom is excellent. It took 20 mins to get used to it and now I can zoom in and out really smoothly, varying the speed. You can even fix the speed of the zoom to ensure it stays nice and smooth.

Okay, other, more expensive, camcorders may give you stills photography (who cares, the resolution is always rubbish!) and various other features, but this one gives you the stuff you actually need. It even has an external mic socket, should you need it.

The only slight downside is that, in poor lighting, the image can get a bit orange. Then again, that is the case for the vast majority of camcorders, even those 2 or 3 times the price of this one.

If you do go for it, don't bother with the horribly expensive accessory pack [...]I got a decent case, 3 sony tapes and a 4 hour battery for about [..] by buying them separately here on Amazon.

Summary: Little Gem...
Comment: I knew exactly what I was buying when I purchased this camera. I love the widescreen feature, that it also records in normal full screen mode and that I can plug in a microphone to capture quality sound at the source. I'm currently completing a qualification in the art of film-making all down to this camera. It has features that were missing on more expensive makes.

It's lightweight and easy to hold with an adjustable strap - even for my big fingers.

Also, Amazon has consistently had the best price for this product - when I bought mine for £179 all-in, other companies were charging up to £299 ex delivery!

It's fairly straightforward to operate. There's an 'easy' mode for the complete novice and a 'professional' mode for when you want to tweak things to suit your needs.

The integral lens cap keeps the lens clear of dust.

It doesn't work in complete darkness (duh!) but I did find the low-light 'night mode' a little grainy in places.

Based on work I had done with this camera, my employers bought two more.

With a decent tripod and a good microphone (I made a boom from a paint roller extension pole), it can give you great results.

I recommend the Canon BP-2L14 Long Life Battery (I bought two!) as it is great for long recordings - after two hours of recording, with the screen on, the battery was still working away happily.

I have used a 1.4GHz PC with a firewire card to capture video - make sure your software can handle 16:9 widescreen. Though the best system to use so far has been an iMac G5 with iMovie HD.

My only gripes (if they can be called that) are that the camera does not have a DV-in socket or an attachment for a spotlight. Also, you have to remove the tripod adaptor as access to the tape is on the bottom. A neck or wrist loop would have made it a bit more secure when holding it.

Recording to VHS or DVD or computer is possible with the supplied SCART plug and leads.

Check out Amazon for great deals on Sony MiniDV tape packs also!

Summary: Okay for the money
Comment: I was a bit disappointed with my purchase. I automatically assumed that this had night vision when I read it had night mode. I had purchased it in hopes of doing a Most Haunted experience in my house (you know, catch an orb or two) but to my disappointment it didn't have the infrared light. Also another thing, you have to have at least a 2 gig megaram (not sure if this is the proper spelling) on your pc in order to download the film. My computer is so slow and I would have to totally get a new one. The only other way to get to download the film is to go out and buy a DVD recorder and connect the camera to the tv and record it from there. Other than that, if you are happy without infrared and you don't have a problem with your computer or already own a DVD recorder it is definitely worth the money. The price is excellent.

Editorial Reviews:

An entry-level, true 16:9 high-resolution camcorder with powerful 22x optical zoom and DIGIC DV for vibrant colours. One-push shooting and a widescreen LCD make the MV890 a perfect video tool.
