Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Great for playing CDs and MP3s Comment: I've owned this player for over a year now. As others have said elsewhere, the picture quality is great (HDMI)but the remote is crap. I have a decent but old but well regarded Philips CD player and own some other decent hi fi equipment. The DVD player is linked up to the hi fi system via an amplifier as I like a big, high quality sound when watching films. Anyway I decided to mess about with the audio settings on the DVD player - something called CD upsampling - which I set to the highest level and put an audio CD in. The sound quality was excellent - precise, detailed and engaging - it knocked the socks off of most (expensive) CD players I've heard. So for the modest price of the DVD player you are also getting an excellent CD player. I wont need to replay my old CD player now! Still only 4 stars though, due to the fiddly remote. Customer Rating: Summary: Nice picture quality but pity about the remote control... Comment: ok just recieved this product and set it up using the hints in the other reviews here - just to note on the steps laid out to sort out the multi-region settings -NOTE - dont get the password/security code mixed up with the hacker code below - the hacker code is the only one of interest in setting up the regions 1. Turn on the unit 2. Open the loading tray (do not close it or put any disc in or the device will try to read the region on THAT disc and will throw up an error) 3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote then use the forward arrows to go into the OTHER set up menus otherwise you spend ages going up and down trying to find the region preferences - frustrating) 4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key and look for the region settings. 5. Enter 138931 6. You will now see the current region code displayed 7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions 8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote 9. Press "OK" on the remote And then you are in business.. other things about the unit - EXCEPTIONAL play back quality - i have just binned a FUSION followed by LOBOS andfind this unit far superior to both depsite the Fusion being a expensive 129 pound unit.. the only thing that bugs the hell out of me is the REMOTE CONTROL - its absolute rubbish - it works but there is no FASTFORWARD or REWIND options only skip to the next sequence so if you have converted video ro home movie to dvd you basically cant fast forward it unless you set up artificial scenes when you transfer it.. the unit doesnt have FF or Rewind either by frame only by scene so frustrating all around here. the cost is good you have to weight up whether the ff rewind and a rubbish remote control bother you enough to buy elsewhere... Customer Rating: Summary: Freezes when screen gets busy! Comment: When playing Divx files, if there's significant movement on the screen, the video starts to jerk (badly!) and the audio starts to crack and drop out. I have verified this with a number of high-quality, high-speed USB flash drives and USB hard drives. I can only speculate that Philips must have skimped on the decoder to keep the price down! Buying this player is a recipe for many ruined nights in, hoping to watch a film and being sorely disappointed part-way through when it starts to jerk and crack! Avoid at all costs! Customer Rating: Summary: Not great at all Comment: i was very underwhelmed with this DVD player. The picture through HDMI is ok, but Divx playback is plain awful. the menus are clunky and slow, and have difficulties playing some discs. It simply wont let you play a movie until the title sequence on the DVD menu has completed one full cycle on more than one of my DVDs. Its cheap, but you get what you pay for. Sorry Philips, you have taken my money for the last time! Customer Rating: Summary: Worked ... for 2 weeks! Comment: Thought I had a fantastic bargain to begin with. Smooth sleek design, lots of features and the opportunity to upgrade system with USB. Played my dvd's fine, even the badly scratched ones. Sadly the remote is a disappointment, you have to press it with force to get it to work and it doesn't work at a distance of more than a metre or so. The manual that came with this didn't tell me what all the buttons on the remote was for, so some guess work and trial/error was involved. On the second week I tried to adjust the video settings as it didn't seem to like one of my DVD's . That is the moment this sytem decided to FAIL on me. It would not operate, I could not even get a menu up even though there was power. My problem could not be resolved by the manual or online. Philips admitted there was a fault with the DVD. This is literally a too good to be true offer in my opinion. You may get one that works for a few years or you might not. It's a risk you might have to take if you plan on buying this. More Reviews
