Customer Rating: Summary: Very good once working Comment: I was in the market for a wireless N router but couldn't wait so went to Maplin to buy one.
Unfortunately they only had one in stock when I went - a Belkin F5D8233UK4. I took this home, fiddled about for a while a got it connected... it connected around 5Mbps when I was getting a solid 8Mbps with my old router. I decided to take it back and swop it for something else...
So now I've got this, the Netgear DG834N. It has a wizard type set-up which doesn't really give you any options to change settings. Unfortunately the wizard wouldn't recognise my internet connection (Be Unlimited). I had to call the support helpline (in India). After about 45 mins on the phone with the guy telling me things like disconnect the ADSL line from the router and plug it directly into your computer (what!?) :S he got me to do a hard reset on the router which involved poking the reset button in for 30 seconds.
After doing this the router config page changed, it allowed me into the router settings rather than the wizard. The tech support guy then had me doing many other things which I knew wouldn't work. In between doing what he was telling me, I found the settings that I needed to change - hoorah!
I changed the Multiplexing Method to LLC-BASED, the VPI to 0 and VCI to 101.
Now the router works great! It's connected at my full 8Mbps and the wireless network is great. When doing a speedtest at www.speedtest.net I get almost the same internet connection speed wireless as I do wired. Can't ask for any more than that.
So what are my thoughts... most internet connections will be recognised so the router will work almost out the box. Unfortunately it didn't recognise my broadband but then it does use unusual settings. The router itself looks almost Wii like so it's nice aesthetically. The wireless network is now supporting a PS3, Wii and a media center PC - they all work as if they were connected by Ethernet.
7/10 - Only let down by the issues I had and fairly poor tech support.
Customer Rating: Summary: Close, but no cigar Comment: This was a piece of cake to install, and with N spec USB on our Dell laptop and as standard on our MacBook and MacBook Pro's, the speed was 270 and range excellent throughout the house. In fact 5 stars until...day 6 when the wireless just packed up. The lamp was illuminated on the modem, but the device could not be detected by either of our 2 laptops, 2 MacBooks, a Desktop PC, I-Pod Touch, 4 various Nokia phones (you get the message). After a fruitless 70 minutes on the phone to someone in NetGear technical support in India (with an accent so strong I could barely understand him), instructing me to change channel etc, he pronounced that it can't be the modem that is at fault, and I should contact Nokia, Apple, Dell & Toshiba to report faults with their respective wireless systems!!! So no stars for reliability! I have opted for a replacement unit rather than a refund, lets hope the next one lasts longer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Childs Play 2 SetUP Comment: Very very easy to setup. Just keep pen and paper handy to write down all the Passwords you create. And put the CD in the drive and follow the instructions. Your 12 years old can do it.
Highly Recommended.
Customer Rating: Summary: Stopped working Comment: I've had this router for just over a year now and it's suddenly stopped working properly. Turning it on and off doesn't help - the correct lights don't come on. Sometimes, it works after I leave it turned off for long periods of time. Not impressed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Speedy And Simple Comment: Wow! I bought this to replace my old v1 DG834G which had been around the blocks for several years, and I couldn't be happier...
Being already familiar with Netgear's menus and setup it took less than 5 minutes to install and configure (including a bunch of custom firewall rules and custom services) and hey-presto we're working.
I have various devices on my network, including Dell and Apple kit of varying ages, and as I reused the old wirelss security options, none of it needed to be reconfigured. What's more, I now get a 'very good' or 'excellent' signal in parts of my home where I previously had only flakey coverage, and my newer kit is able to take advantage of the 'N' network and work much faster (up to 100Mb/s, not quite the theoretical maximum, but a significant improvement). The difference is amazing.
The one thing I didn't try was importing the settings of my device onto this device. Not sure if that would work or not, but given it's so quick to setup I didn't bother. Finally, the firmware needed updating to the latest version (see http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834N.asp), but that was completely painless and only took a couple of minutes.
