Customer Rating: Summary: An excellent piece of kit Comment: I purchased this from Amazon, and all I can say is how impressive it is. It was ordered at circa 1pm and arrived before 9 the following morning!
The machine is very user friendly, and really comes up to the mark. I haven't been disappointed, despite reading some ordinary reviews from other people.
The image quality is excellent (admittedly compared to my old tape model), I haven't come across any of the software problems others have faced (I run a PC rather than a Mac) but the photo's aren't exactly great. This last point is the only thing stopping me giving it a 5 star rating. I also like the touch screen functionality.
All in all, if you're after something to capture memories of the kids I'd say this is ideal. If you want to shoot the next big movie or use it instead of your still camera it may not be for you though.
Customer Rating: Summary: Johnny B. Comment: I am 82 years old and have been interested in all aspects of still photography ever since my mother gave me a Kodak Box Brownie for my twelfth birthday. At this age I no longer want to tote a big bag around with 35mm SLR plus lenses etc, and recently bought a SONY Cybershot digital camera for stills, which slips into the breast pocket of my shirt. I now live 800 miles from my daughters, and decided I should give "camcording" a try to keep them up-to-date with my activities. I discarded the mini-DV and DVD versions, not wanting to tote more stuff about with the camcorder. I settled for the SONY DCR-SR52 HDD. Amazon's speedy and efficient service brought the camera to me within a few days.
The camcorder really does fit into the palm of the hand. Superb build quality. The touch screen took a bit of getting used to, but I now have no difficulty. SONY do not supply a bag with the camcorder, so I bought an inexpensive one, well padded, (I had no desire to carry a bag with SONY written on it - 82 years, white haired, with a stick = easy target for the yobbos,) to give me peace of mind. Practically no weight to carry around, the strap sits comfortably on my shoulder and the bag has a pocket for the only accessory I carry, which is a spare battery. The lower end of the zoom range is useful, otherwise zooming is impractical without a tripod. The supplied battery is too small, the recording time being shortened by the amount of use of the zoom, switching on and off, reviewing the shots etc. I wanted to keep the length of the camcorder down and settled for the H50 version for the second battery. The H100 version would possibly upset the balance in the hand. The remote control gets me into the picture.
I have a PC and a laptop running Windows XP Home. Installation was achieved after I had sussed out what SONY was writing about. Could be clearer.
I am now in the process of editing my trial shots, and find that the editing system is sophisticated enough to give the results I want.
An excellent buy.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best in the Hard drive category Comment: Hi, I tried a lot of hard drive camcorders before settling on a SR52. I have been using this for last 3 months, and have travelled a fair bit with this. My feedback:
1. Handling: Quite small and fits well in to your palm. For the monster capacity that it has on the disk, this has a very comfy handle. Fits it in to even a small camera bag.
2. Installation and start up: Softwares were easy to install (BEWARE: Only for Windows) and initial charging was for about 2 hours. Plug and play from then.
3. Features: The zoom is fantastic, however, a tripod would help when trying to zoom far away objects as it takes few seconds for the blurr to settle down. Unfortunately, there is no demarcation between Optical and digital zoom in the view finder :-( The night shot is an excellent option and gives you vivid pictures even in pitch darkness. Still photo quality is not the greatest. Occupies a lot of space when you download this in to your system (largely due to the pixel qualities)
4. Battery: Low, it runs for around 45 minutes only if you alternate between on and off and goes up to about 75 minutes if you shoot in one stretch.
Overall, certainly worth spending this for the Sony Quality.
Customer Rating: Summary: Its a great camcorder Comment: It is a very compact and easy to use camcorder with a 30gb of HD capacity. Its really impressive and i am 100% satisfied with the quality.
I also strongly recommend this against buying DCR-SR32, because you will get an impressive 1 megapixel quality and a remote control, very useful for capture personal moments(SR-32 doesn,t have remote). If you are planning to buy a standard definition camcorder, this will be the best for you.
Customer Rating: Summary: Got it today.. Bloody Excellent! Comment: I decided on the SR52 after reading many reviews on may camcorders, basically because most were positibe and the only negatives were the battery life and no case (Solved by spending under 10 quid on cheap case on ebay and the best battery (the 100 one, not sure of full name) for about £70 on here. (Yet to recieve either as both ordered tonight and I recieved the camcorder today. First usage was a doddle, plugged in the dock, charger, inserted battery then placed camcorder on dock, left for about an hour and a half to charge.
Picked it up and filmed all around my house, the zoom is amazing, nothing short of spectactular, even filmed my brother playing his xbox on his tv and its excellent quality. Maybe loses focus for a slight second if you move and zoom at the same time but this didnt bother me at all as it soon focuses. Sound was a bit low on playback, but soon found option to turn this up. overall first use - excellent.
Installed the software (took longer then expected - 10 minutes) but was simple and easy. Attached usb camera from dock to laptop - instant pop up - took about 7 minutes to import about 15 minutes of footage over on HQ(had to change from the standard SQ) not to bothered about as the quality played back from what I did was exactly what I was hoping for. I had a quick little play, editing and cutting short bits of film out and saving them but that was it.
Then plugged the dock into the tv - RYW cables into the scart then into the TV. Took a bit of fiddling as I was putting it onto my old 21" bedroom tv, and I had to change it from LCD to the other option (again forgotten what it was called sorry, but easy to find as you should now know what you need to change. After I changed it, Voila, it was on the TV and I was watching what I filmed a few minutes earlier controlling it with the remote provided.
Very happy with the purchase although it cost a bit more then I wanted as I was looking for a camcorder to take travelling. Recommend it entirely for beginners and professionals. Although I am a beginner (My first camcorder other than using my Dads 14 year old beast of one) and I am already looking into the Lenses for wideangle/close up, Tripods, Cases, Batterys etc and I have only used it for 5 hours!
Hope this helps you make up your mind as the reviews previously did it for me - although parting with the cash was the hardest part.
