Customer Rating: Summary: Couldn't be easier Comment: As usual great service from amazon, item received within 24hrs of ordering. Setup couldn't be simpler, connect a couple of leads, install software and hey presto it 's up and running. Took me approx 10 mins to get the drive working. Started to backup my photos and music yesterday, 40 gig transferred in about 12hrs. All in all im very impressed, especially with the transfer speed. So far would recommend, wont give it 5 stars because ive not had it long enough to discover any potential glitches.
Customer Rating: Summary: May not do what it says on the box Comment: I've just purchased this item and installed it today. It installs easily and is very quiet. However, one of the reasons I purchased it was to attach my printer (an Epson R360) and USB external drive, so as to make these available to the network. While I can print, the document is not removed from the print queue, nor does the essential 'Status Monitor' work. I also understand that the USB drive may have to be reformatted to work with the LinkStation. So beware and confirm your printer will work with this drive before purchase.
Customer Rating: Summary: Works perfeclty Comment: I always get concerned when one or two people write bad reviews. This hard disk works perfectly. I did not even have to install their software on my windows vista laptop. The HDD is hard wired (ethernet) to my sky netgear wirless router and i am loading images and mp3's from both my laptops through the wirless sky router.
Loading Huge data is slow (80GB)... takes 2 hours through the sky netgear router. Probably quicker if you use a direct link USB.
The drive is not a quite as a laptop, but its not loud. When downstairs next to the phone and router you will not hear it.
Its got a cooling fan built in which is needed for HDD's if the are on all the time. This is then perfect for a seprated networked HDD shared in the home or office.
It has an on off button so safer to disconnect i guess?
Looks and feels solid.
Customer Rating: Summary: Don't be put off by the negative comments... Comment: Many of the Buffalo Linkstation Live reviews here are significantly out of date. I've recently taken delivery (May 2008) of one of these beasties from Amazon and have had no problems with it whatsoever. Potential purchasers might like to note the following points:
The firmware currently supplied is version 2.10 so there's no need to mess around with downloads and upgrades - it's plug'n'play as it comes straight out of the box.
Everything works just fine with Vista.
Far from being noisy, the unit is whisper-quiet in operation. Quieter than all of my desktops and all but my quietest laptop, in fact.
The unit does not continually thrash the drive when some of the more intensive media serving is activated. The most frenzied activity occurs only when the library is being updated, and even then the noise level is less than any of my PCs.
I've had no problems with the Linkstation acting as a shared library for iTunes. With 1,167 albums currently loaded on there it works first time, every time, and keeps on going all day.
I've no doubt that some of the more negative reviews were accurate at the time of writing, but things have moved on. I'd have no hesitation in recommending this product based on my experience so far, indeed I may well be buying a second example now I've found how useful it is.
Customer Rating: Summary: Much improved after firmware update Comment: Having read the reviews before purchasing, I took the plunge. Yes, the drive was prone to rattling away (often needlessly and in the middle of the night when all clients were switch off and in bed) but it is not a traditional drive. It has a raft of electronics surrounding it in the casing and has to organise and housekeep itself. So it is assumed this is what was going on.
I visited the Buffalo website and discovered a firmware update for the drive. This was easy to download (though a sizeable object) and apply.
Both me and a friend (who has the same unit as myself) can now claim that the drive is much much quieter. No doubt some early niggles have been addressed by the manufacturer.
Overall, we are pleased with the purchase. This drive is also a print server and the manual details how to connect and configure a PC to use it as such.
A great asset to anyones network.
