Customer Rating: Summary: Good value and multi region right out of the box Comment: I have some old VHS tapes that I still watch from time to time - my old VCR packed up so I either needed a new machine or otherwise buy the old tape titles on DVD. I didn't fancy spending on new DVDs so I checked out who still does VCRs and spotted this Samsung.
Setting it up was very easy as I had previously had a VCR attached to my TV with a Scart cable. I just plugged the RF cable in as per the manual, hooked up the Scart, powered it up and it went into Auto set up. Two minutes later it was done. It had tuned to the TV stations and set the date and time. I didn't need to go into the menu at all. This is the simplest set up I've ever experienced when hooking up new kit, so top marks to Samsung.
I also found that I could play a US format tape immediately. I didn't need the multi-region hack that other users had tried.
The only minor irritation is the noise. It's perhaps a little noisier than other VCRs I've had, but this isn't noticeable most of the time.
In short this unit is great value, easy to set up and I'm very pleased with it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Even a technophobe like me .... Comment: was able to work Mr Shoesmith's hack to play multi region dvds.
I found it easy to set up and it plays region 1 and 2 discs beautifully.
Vcr also easy to use and record/playback very good quality.
Extremely pleased with this for the money!
Customer Rating: Summary: good little machine for the money Comment: bought one of these last minute for my Mum for Xmas. Works well and she's happy with it.
Customer Rating: Summary: If you want a value for money region free, this is the one! Comment: I bought this mainly because the hack in the first review would enable the region free function on this player, I didn't want to pay too much for a ready made multi-region player because in my experience they often don't play all region 1 discs.
The hack worked like a charm as has already been said, and the delivery was fast despite using super saver.
The picture is great and the functions are easy to use, I am by no means an electronics wizz kid so needed something I could just plug in and turn on 'and away you go' sort of thing!
This player really did it for me, it is definatley value for money.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not bad for the money Comment: I've just purchased this as I previously had a DVD, VHS video player, satelite and a freeview box all plumbed into the TV but due to a lack of scarts could not record from satelite (without using a scart switcher). The DVD died and I replaced the dvd and vhs with this. TBH for my needs this is absolutely fine. I self record and download most of my films and it plays them all inc DIVx files, but it did have a wobble where it wouldn't play a standard MPEG2 file but it played in another machine, but when when I put it back in the Samsung it played!
It has 2 scarts, so now I can record my satelite and when using as a DVD player has a display on the front which I find handy as increasingly manufacturers are moving towards on screen displays.
It's 5.1 sound, multi region using the hack posted, multi format, music player and was easy to set up. I'd have another.
