Customer Rating: Summary: Mac users and alike. Comment: I have a MAC Notebook. I read all the reviews on this item and thought why not it's entry level and enough space for me. The NAS Drive was picked up straight away by my Mac. The WEB based interface is good and easy to use. However heres the bad news, through extensive searching the forums I have come to the conclusion that MAC does not support NAS. I tried for 4 days solid and nearly a devorce to try and connect the drive to Mac Airport and Time Machine. There is a command you can type into Terminal to tell Mac to recognise the Nas Drive as it is unsupported. Mac can see the drive but still refuses to do anything with it and when it does decide to recognise it, it fails at the last hurdle. Don't take my word for it, do the research, that is my recommendation, especially if you are a MAC user!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good product Comment: If you are looking for a reliable external hard drive to back up your files then this does the job perfectly. Yes you need to format the Hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS but this is really very simple (right click on the drive icon and select format). If you are trying to access it accross a network im not to sure about that but if its just for backing up your home files then this is ideal.
I have had mine for almost two years and it has proved to be 100% reliable, quiet and has fast read write speeds across the USB2 connection.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great drive - simple and well made Comment: I couldn't find any other network attached drive for a similar price. I was looking for something to back my PC up to and have hidden this away in a cupboard attached to a Zytel 'home plug' unit to provide the network. The unit is nicely made and quiet and comes with everything you need including network and USB leads.
The bundled backup software seems pretty good and can be set to backup files as soon as they've been created/changed. It can also save multiple revisions of files. Since the file backup is just a copy of the files it's simple to retrieve them and you can of course just plug the drive into any computer with the USB lead.
I didn't have any problem setting it up on the network, it obtained an IP address that the bundled software then finds. Web interface allows changes of IP address and setting up of shares. There's not any security on the shares, which is a shame, but not really an issue for my purposes. It can also act as an FTP server (where you can configure users), but I haven't tried this.
Overall, very happy with it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Poor support Comment: Beware of buying this if you don't know much about compuet networks. I set my hard drive up to wrok off my wireless router and for a month this worked fine. But the minute it started to go wrong I was left to my own devices my a disinterested and unhelpful freecom customer support. I have ended up paying for a compuetr expert to come to my home to set up the whole system. If things like 'IP addresses' mean little to you avoid this product
Customer Rating: Summary: Bad Medicine Waltz Comment: This is a good looking unit and feels sturdy. Thats the good stuff now...I bought this as a NAS drive to back up the drives of 2 intel imacs. It worked with minimal configuration for about three weeks then it would not connect. I have a friend who is a Microsoft trained network manager and he could not get this drive to mount in Windows or Mac OS X . Freecoms software is poor I had about 10 emails from their support but still am not able to get to my files. The disc comes FAT 32 formatted so my macs cant see the folders using USB. Save yourself some time and I mean days look elsewhere.
