Customer Rating: Summary: How to Get 300mbs ? Comment: This product has got good reviews, but there do seem to be a few problems and if you search the web forums you will find lot of threads with disappointed people who only manage to get 130mbs!
I'm a competent computer user but in no way an expert, however the set up for the d-link software is not the best, but you will get the thing working.
How to get the quoted 300mbs is another thing, even with an N network card i still only get 130mbs, there is something about having to set the thing to 5mhz or something, but basically i have lost patience and 130mbs seen enough for now.
Oh also if you are using two users in windows xp the non admin account connection speed drops to about 10mbs - why i have no idea.
Do a search on the forums for the "d-link 655 only 130mbs" and you will see what i mean.
have fun - oh any advice gladly received
Customer Rating: Summary: Impressed so far Comment: I was looking for a router which would be powerful and future proof. After much investigation, I decided on the D-Link Xtreme N(tm) Gigabit Router (DIR-655), which has both WAN and LAN gigabit ports. The only obvious drawback is that although the router has a USB port, it is near useless as you cannot connect a printer or hard drive to it. The router was bought from amazon.co.uk and supplied by Pixmania for £74.35 including postage and packing.
Incidentally, for top performance, it's best to have PCs with gigabit ethernet (1000Base-T) adapter cards, because if you were to move files between the PCs then you should see an improvement compared with PC fitted with 100Base-T cards. Your PC should also have either a PCIe (PCI Express) X1 slot or an onboard NIC that connects via PCIe to the CPU.
I took delivery a couple of days ago (a little disconcertingly the language on the packaging is in French) and got it working without a problem. Here's what did.
I switched off the PC and powered off the SB5100 SURFboard cable modem by removing the power cable. I waited several minutes, then connected the router to the modem and PC by the WAN and LAN ports respectively and, ignoring the set up disk, booted up the modem, router and PC (in that order). You need to wait for the modem's four green lights to come on before booting up the router.
I got internet access first time. I then brought up the router's web page using http://192.168.0.1/ and did some more configuration:
1. Disabled the wireless network (as I'm not using it)
2. On the firewall: I enabled anti-spoof checking and set UDP Endpoint Filtering to Port and Address Restricted (to give a bit more protection than the default Address Restricted). Stateful packet inspection (SPI) was enabled by default
3. Set the clock to the correct time.
4. Flashed the firmware from 1.11EU to the current 1.20EU.
5. Enabled email notification to inform me whenever the log is full or there is a newer firmware version
Initially I didn't clone the MAC address of my PC's Ethernet Controller into the in the WAN port, but still got internet access. However, I've subsequently done this.
It's early days, but I have to say that it's looking good so far. Indeed, judging from the number of TCP connections blocked by the firewall, I'm well pleased to have this first line of defence.
Just to note something: if the router is switched off, then the router's time must be reset if you want accurate log times, otherwise the time will start from when the router was turned off.
Incidentally, here are some wireless routers which I dismissed.
SMC SMCWGBR14-N Barricade N ProMax Draft 11n
Lacks heatsinks on either the Ubicom processor or Realtek switch or even a thermal pad
Linksys WRT350N wireless router with Storage Link
Poor reported performance of the USB port for connecting storage devices
Apple AirPort Extreme
No firewall, no gigabit ethernet ports
Netgear WNR854T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Router Gigabit Edition
Awful user reviews
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Product Poor Information Comment: Great product works like a dream, but the Set Up Wizard using the CD gives no option to clone the computer MAC address and connection just to the internet fails, it was only when logging on to the router that the option to clone the MAC address was offered. I know the info is in the booklet but it should be an option in the Smart Set Up wizard.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very fast, great wireless range, works with separate adsl broadband modem Comment: OK, first thing to say is that I'm writing this review wirelessly several rooms away from the new Router and it knocks spots off anything I've had before and is very very fast. As another reviwer recommended, I've got it linked to a Linskys AM200 modem for Plusnet adsl broadband. It is NOT just for cable as one reviewer said, but set up was a bit frustrating, a case of methodical trial and error, so here's some things I did that got it all going that might help. First the modem was set to RFC2364pppoA with VC settings EXACTLY as supplied by my ISP and half bridge ticked (that last bit is VERY important - don't ask me why). Then the router was set to dynamic IP (even though it was worded as if this was for cable). Don't ask me why this all worked but it did and could save you some time. Then you've got one superb system even if, like me, you're not using the 'n' standard in your machines. Oh, one more hint, I had a problem when I tried to set an admin password and had to reset and start again, so I've not bothered this time! I have secured the wireless bit of it though. So although the set up with a modem was a bit fiddly, the end results are absolutely superb.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nearly a Year now and so reliable (update) Comment: I've never had a problem with this wireless router. Everything that I've needed to connect to this has connected seamlessly. Cheap laptops have been able to connect at full speed. Even my old Palm TX will connect no problems. Until I bought a 2G Ipod Touch and for some reason it would not connect.
So in a fit of madness I bought an Apple extreme wireless router. Now my Ipod connects but the speed of everything else and the range is significantly worse. The Apple looks nice and costs twice as much as the D-link, but it's all show and no go.
So to cut a long story short, I've gone back to the D-link and I'll wait for Apple to fix the Ipod Touch. Here I am, in the garden (30ft and three walls away) back with a good signal downloading at 20Mb from my broadband connection. Bliss! Truly a recommended product.
Update...version 2.2 of the Ipod Touch Software has now sorted the connection problem and wi-fi via the Ipod Touch is now very good.
