Summary: A terribly useful bit of kit!
Comment: I bought this about 2 weeks ago as I am having to drive more than I used to for work. We've tested it a few times lately and found it to be very useful. The maps are clear, easy to read and the display is informative and clear. It is also very easy to programme with a new location (especially so as I tend not to read manuals!). The additional features, such as ways to avoid hold ups and are also very useful. We live in a very rural area but despite this, we've had no issues with loss of signal or misdirections.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who needs a Sat nav system.

Summary: Don't buy if you have a Mac
Comment: Do not buy this product if you have a Mac as the support team only have Windows tools to fix problems. I bought a new map but after installing it the device is "unable to store settings: file access error". The only solution from TomTom is to plug the device into a Windows PC and run a Windows exe. So I'm stuck with a device that either won't work or works with an out-of-date map. AVOID.

Summary: a waste of money
Comment: I had an older model stolen, it was brilliant! Of course I bought a new Tom Tom and I really regret it. I can go 15 miles and lose the signal 5 times, it often shows me driving in the fields off the motorway, the time taken to regain a signal can be very frustrating especially if you are in a big city. I was recently in Salzburg with clients and was very embarrassed to explain that I had to drive around a bit to see if I could get a signal. I might add that I did take it back to the shop and they sent it back to the factory, after one month they gave it back to me and said it was just fine, maybe I should buy an external antenna! The battery life is nonexistent and, believe it or not,it does not come with a mains hookup plug to use in your house, you MUST hook it up to your PC. I have been able to run the Tom Tom program but it will not let me operate the device (error code 9000 fatal error). This was a big investment for me and now I am stuck with something I can not rely on!

Summary: Do NOT connect this to a computer
Comment: This worked great as a navigation tool, until I connected it to my computer to update the software. The SD card is now corrupt.

My advice is to by something else.

Summary: Excellent addition to the car.
Comment: Works a treat in a Focus with a front screen heater, soon you dont need the display (probally safer anyway) the directions are generally clear and helpful.
Minor Niggles - "left turn ahead" is not the same as "turn left ahead" it seems to suggest the former is an alternate route option. The beep for exceeding the speed limit is not always consistent - it will sometimes (very occasionally) suggest a lower speed than reality, but only for 20 yards or so.
Its routes out and back are generally not the same and probally takes account of estimated traffic speeds at different times of the day, still showed me some good alternatives i'd not have tried.
Oh, and the fixed speed cameras thing is great!

Editorial Reviews:

The TomTom One XL GPS navigator really does its manufacturer proud! Thanks to this nifty GPS navigator with a large 4.3" navigation screen, you can make your trip safer, more relaxed and more fun. The TomTom One XL calculates the quickest, shortest and toll-free routes, and also keeps you up to date with the optional real-time traffic information kit. Plus, the large LCD screen makes it even easier to view the navigational instructions. The TomTom One XL is Bluetooth compatible as well, so you can make phone calls in complete safety. Furthermore, this navigator pinpoints thousands of points of interests such as hotels, restuarants, petrol stations or museums. With the TomTom One XL, you'll never go off course again!
