Summary: DVD playback
Comment: On the whole have been very happy with the machine, agree with the comments on slow start but we are learning to be patient! We haven't gone too much in to detail but have found one big problem with DVD playback- it doesn't do Region 2 (which is what Europe comes under). Being not technically minded and checking the manual there doesn't seem to be any reference to dealing with this. Can anyone tell us how to change this or have we been completely ignorant and not paid attention to the details and it isn't possible? Just took it for granted that it would automatically play DVDs from UK when we bought it.

Summary: freeview - would recommend
Comment: Spent ages deciding which DVD recorder player to buy as wanted one which would record freeview while I was also watching freeview.
Would definitely recommend this, to record and view another freeview station at the same time you will need a separate digital set top box. Took me a while to work out how to do this as doesnt explain in the manual, but by pressing AV in the TV part of the handset it switches from the DVD freeview to the separate set top box so when recording from the DVD recorder you need to watch through the separate set top box. Also wasnt sure whether to get one with hard drive but am glad I did as don't have to bother with DVDs. Have option to record from hard drive onto DVD if you wish though - and if you can work out which type of DVD to buy!
Really clear screen shows what you have recorded. Can set programmes to record easily by going into TV guide and clicking on the programme you want.
A big advantage is that while a programme is recording you can watch it from the start - even while its still recording. So if you have to miss the first part of a programme you can press record then just press play when you are ready to watch, even if its not finished recording the programme.
Have had same problem as last reviewer and havent worked out how to set timer on recorder. Tried what it suggested in manual but didnt work. Anybody else had any luck?

Summary: i thought it would be easier
Comment: i got this unit a week ago and have almost thrown it out the window a few times now.
i am a computer programmer so should be able to figure this out but the manual is the worst i have ever read. i finally figured out how to record - select the channel on the DVD recorder and press record, or use the DVD guide to time a recording.

buti can't get the "direct TV record" to work. i have a panasonic viera TV - just got that also - thought they would ork well together.

also, cant find a way to start recording then set a duration for recording - like if a am watching something then going to bed. i don't want to fill up 160 gig with rubbish.

Summary: Very Good Machine - still learning
Comment: Received this machine Friday (less than a week since order) and now (Monday)am very happy with it.

Instruction Manual - Complicated in places - but I am getting to grips with it. The terminology is not the greatest, and I am confused at parts, but overall I now have a good grip on most features.

Freeview - I am in deepest darkest Dorset and as a result I cannot receive Freeview and this DOES NOT have a Analogue Tuner - I did know this when I bought it and accept that for the time being I am losing out on its functionality. I am therefore limited to Sky freeview through its AV2 input.

Pause Live TV - You can watch what you record and pause it whilst it is still recording only. Therefore no quick buttons to press to set this instantly if the telephone rings etc - unless you are anticipating it.

Recording - To offset my disapointment with the Freeview, I have worked out now that I can set my Sky freeview Planner (with Autoview) and if you have things configured correctly with the unit set to 'External Link', then the unit will automatically record those programmes - this gives me the same functionality as the Guide recording planner from freeview on the unit - but did take me most of the weekend to figure out how.

Overall - I am still learning, but got exactly what I wanted, whilst still remembering I am missing some of the functions. Very Pleased...

Summary: Best thing I've bought for ages
Comment: Virtually silent operation, easy to set up and use, this machine has made recording a pleasure. If you are watching something you can set it recording while you watch and then pause it if you are interrupted - brilliant.

Editorial Reviews:

DVD Recorder with HDD (160 GB) and DVB-T tuner, SD slot
Affirming its industry-leading position in recordable DVD products, Panasonic is introducing four new DIGA series DVD recorders, the DMR-EX87, DMR-EX77, DMR-EZ47V, and DMR-EZ27 - that offer 1080p image quality in both recording and playback, easy operation, and improved networking capabilities.

All four models come equipped with the HDMI terminal, which allows easy, single-cable connection to compatible equipment.
They also offer Panasonic's proprietary VIERA Link functions for linked operation of other AV devices, and these functions are now even more convenient. Beginning with the 2007 model year, it is now possible to control a DIGA recorder, when connected to a Panasonic VIERA TV, using VIERA's remote control unit. This provides convenient control over frequently used functions by using only VIERA's remote. By pressing the VIERA Link button on the remote, a DIGA menu screen can be accessed directly from the VIERA Link menu screen, to make recording settings or play a DVD.

All four new models also offer improved image quality with 1080p technology.
By combining intelligent i/p Conversion and 1080p Up-Conversion technologies, DIGA's 1080p technology renders high-resolution 1080p images from DVD movies and TV broadcasts. Also they are equipped with a new digital tuner that achieves stable signal reception even under poor signal conditions, such as when signals are reflected by surrounding buildings. The new tuner also prevents the generation of block noise. This optimises the high image and sound quality of digital broadcasts. A host of other attractive features also enhance the new DIGA models.
