Customer Rating: Summary: No longer the best value Comment: As of March 2008, this model has been replaced by the faster, cheaper 2.4 GHz Macbook.
It's still an excellent machine, though, and you should get it if you can find it for under £800.
Customer Rating: Summary: I have got XP installed but never use it Comment: I've had my Macbook for some little while now. it was a replacement for an iBook G4 (and thereby hangs a tale - I sold the iBook for £320, something you would never do with a second-hand PC laptop).
I agree that you can get cheaper versions of some software for a PC, and there is the very odd programme that Mac OSX does not have a version of. As mine came with a free copy of Parallels I duly installed XP, but the thing is that I have only ever used the XP on it about twice, and to be honest I am thinking about just getting ridding of Parallels / XP altogether from it. I suppose in the meantime it's not doing any harm just sitting there. I guess the point I am trying to make is that the Mac comes with just about everything you actually want or need. Yes on the face of it they are on the expensive side, but on the other hand you are not immediately buying anti-virus or a picture editor etc etc. If it's any sort of review, both this and the old one have been lugged around airports and hotels etc etc and they seem to take the knocks and just keep running. I know all Mac users have the rep of being zealots or clones. I try to avoid that. I use Windows at work quite happily and know the value of SQL server environments etc etc, but for a consumer machine that will not frustrate you, go for the Mac. Don't bother with the black one, money for old rope, but the Superdrive (DVD-RW) version is well worth it
Customer Rating: Summary: it "just works" Comment: i have just traded my top of the range vista laptop that was faulty in for this macbook, and i am so pleased! when i bought my vista toshiba laptop about 6 months ago for £1000 and although the specs were great, it never seemed to run as fast as i had expected, and then it stopped working altogether. i have a iphone and was really impressed buy how well it worked so i looked into macs. i found that they can now run applications like office and windows, but their operating system doesnt take as much power to run and works great. Macs also come with what they call garage band which is really fun music creation software, plus photo and movie editing software that i havent had time to play with yet. i have also found that macs boot and work faster than vista laptops. This laptop has 1GB of RAM memory which on a vista laptop, would be a problem (it takes 1GB to run vista properly) but on this it works fast enough but once again this is not a problem as the memory is easily upgradable up to 4GB! Anyway to stop my rambling and conclude, this laptop is great and i would recommend it to anyone
Customer Rating: Summary: Back in the day Comment: Without doubt the best computer I've ever owned. It just does what I want without any of the fuss associated with normal run of the mill PCs. I can finally get on with my work now instead of re-building a windows installation every six months.
I have a friend who mumbles on about 'closed systems' and refuses to acknowledge Apple computers for anything other than looks but the truth is that Macs are the computer for the 'rest of us'. By that I mean people who don't want to be stuck in a room for hours on end making stuff work and fixing system conflicts. People who take no 'geeky' satisfaction from hi-tech traumas.
Even this basic system happily runs the latest applications like Photoshop CS3 without any problems. It will open and happily apply processor heavy filters to 300dpi images without even breaking a sweat.
Airport, the Mac's wi-fi system is superb. I set it up at my Father in laws to use his BT hub and every time I go back with it it just picks it up and uses it without me having to do anything. He spent hours on the phone to a call centre in India setting it up and I did it in 30 seconds. Mac v PC? No contest really.
Thanks must also go to Microsoft because their release of Vista was responsible for pushing me back into the arms of the Macintosh, arms I never intend to leave again!
Customer Rating: Summary: great machine Comment: The laptop is great.
I just don't understand the difference in price with applestore.
