Customer Rating: Summary: Survived the Desert Comment: I've had a 250 Gb Toughdrive for 3 months now (bought from Amazon). It's been with me everywhere; including a 3 week trip in May to a hot and dusty warzone (no prizes for guessing who I work for). It's worked faultlessly throughout, despite the extreme temperatures, sand and more than just a few knocks. I did reformat it as soon as I got it to NTFS so that I could store DVD image files on it (they are over 4 Gb so won't work on FAT 32).
Data security wise, I use a combination of Truecrypt (www.trucrypt.org) and NTI Shadow to ensure my personal data was continuously backed up from my laptop to an encrypted volume on the toughdrive. Again this all worked faultlessly.
I particularly like the fixed short USB lead and that you can confidently chuck the drive into your backpack without surrounding it in neoprene or bubble wrap. This all means there's only one thing to remember (nothing worse than having the drive with the data you need, but you've forgotten to pack the cable).
In summary the toughdrive has proven itself as an amazingly rugged bit of kit for the price, and deserves the 5 stars. I would pay more for guaranteed water-resistance (the toughdrive does not claim to be water-resistant although some reviews suggest it might be), but perhaps that's asking a bit too much.
Customer Rating: Summary: Doesn't work on some Macs Comment: Works on my PC fine but doesn't work on a couple of macs I've tried it in.
Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointing Comment: I paid something like £40 over the odds for this product under the illusion that it would be especially reliable and resilient for the use I had in mind. Instead, the LED indicator light has failed after a couple of months so you can no longer tell whether it is in the "connected" or "disconnected" state. What is worse, for the first time in my experience of buying technology on the Internet, the manufacturer seems to regard their failure as my fault and require me to pay to deliver the rejected drive to them for replacement. Based on this experience, I strongly recommend against buying Freecom products.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good value and highly recommended! Comment: Brilliant product! Compact, robust and a really good looking drive. Freecom have thought of everything the integrated USB cable is a great idea, better still there is an extension cable if your USB port is at the back of your PC. Being a bit of a novice I found the free software very useful. I haven't tried the 2-metre drop test but its good to have the peace of mind that my data is well protected. Good value and highly recommended!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great drive... while it works! Comment: After reading the reviews I was very excitable about getting this hard drive. And sure enough, it was sleek, quiet whilst being used and transfers data at a decent rate.
Despite this, i had 2 of these drives fail on me! Thats right.. not one, but two!! The drive spent most of the time sitting next to my laptop and only ever got taken out in a padded laptop bag. So the fact that they failed was all the most infuriating.
They both failed whilst transferring data, one had a spindle that stopped spinning properly and the other felt the need to prompt a re-fotmat every time i plugged it in.
If you are going for this, i hope ur luck is better than mine!
