Summary: About as good as it gets
Comment: I have owned the Canon S5 IS for six months and have grown to appreciate its very comprehensive functions, its ease of use, and its astounding capabilities for close-up and telephoto work. Many times, I have been with people using a full SLR camera and they have been very surprised at the fantastic macro shots this camera can take of tiny insects or the insides of flowers. You can literally get up so close that the lens is virtually touching the object you are photographing and it will still be in focus. On the other hand, the 12 times optical zoom enables you to take very clear photographs from a great distance away from the subject - its like looking through a good pair of binoculars.

The camera can be used on automatic all the time and the results will be fine. However, as you beging to explore the camera you will find many advanced functions. For example, I use exposure bracketing, which takes three images at different exposures which can then be combind on the computer to make a high dymamic range photograph. There is a colour picker function which lets you take, say, a photograph of a woman with a red dress on in which everything except the dress will be in black and white. The panorama function works easily and the Photostitch software provided with the camera will assemble the images into a perfect panaorama.

However, for myself, two other functions stand out - firstly the magnificent flip-out LCD which lets you take photographs from low down without bending, or high over a crowd of people by holding the camera over your head. Or for a self-portrait, just flip and twist the LCD and point the camera at yourself and you will see your image in the LCD.

Secondly, don't neglect the excellent video capabilities of this camera. I have a 4gb memory card and this will record 30 minutes of top-quality video with very fine sound from the stereo microphones located either side of the lens.

I highly recommend this camera - there is much more I could say about it and its countless advanced functions. I have friends with SLRs who struggle to get the best from them, and also have to cart round heavy cameras and lenses. I have complete confidence that I am better off with the S5 IS, where ease of use and portability enables me to take it where SLRs can't go and have it always with me without the need for a heavy bag of accessories.

Summary: Amazing camera - buy one now
Comment: I have one of these beauties with a 8mb sdhc card which lets me store over 3000 photos at full resolution, along with high quality video. I have taken some pictures which make me look like a professional photographer. Believe me, my skills are less than average!

I bought this as a replacement for a good 5 megapixel camera and this blows it away. The zoom function is excellent and the quality of pictures has to be seen to be believed. Additionally, there are numerous functions and a fantastic 2.5 inch high-res flip-out screen is included.

If you have any hesitation about which camera to buy, then just buy this one, honestly its a no-brainer!

Summary: fantastic camera for photo and video
Comment: if you have any doubts about purchasing the Canon S5 you must be crazy.i`ve had this camera from it`s release week and still can`t find a fault with it. it takes great photos. it`s zoom range is out of this world.it has most functions an slr has. i use mine with a canon 430ex speedlite and i`ve had better results than any 35mm slr ever gave me.i recently purchased a Sony camcorder to shoot videos of the kids and compared it with the Canons S5 video recording and believe me the Canon blew it away....Honestly!!! if i had to be really picky the one & only thing i dislike about it is the sd card has to be removed by opening the battery compartment cover.i paid £310 for mine, Amazon are selling for £220 delivered,WOW! overall i`d have to give the Canon S5 9.9/10 BUY BUY BYE:)

Summary: A versatile compact
Comment: I bought the S5 last year, having previously owned the S3is. Overall, the camera has met my expectations. OK, its not as good as a full DSLR, but at less than half the price of a DSLR + lens, it is good value as a versatile point and shoot.

Pros -
Looks like a real SLR!
Easy to handle
Excellent zoom range
Wide angle and tele lens are available to extend the zoom even further
Light enough to easily carry on your shoulder
Very good image quality at low ISO. I enlarge to A4 size and and am pleased with the results
Uses standard AA batteries which you can buy anywhere
Decent recycling time on the built in flash
Has a number of different photo modes if you want to experiment
Hot shoe is a nice feature
Viewing screen is good (much better than S3)

Cons -
The supplied memory card is far too small, be prepared to buy a bigger card. I use the Sandisk Extreme III 2gb card.
Not good in poor light - like many compacts, photo quality suffers as the ISO increases
Too big to just slip into your pocket (if that matters to you)

Tips
Buy a case for it!
Be prepared to invest in a dedicated flashgun if you do a lot of indoor photography in big rooms
Buy a bigger memory card

Comment: Absolutly amazing camera, with great 12x optical zoom lens! Easy to use navigation on various menu's etc on the camera help to allow you to quickly set up the right settings for your photo. Video option is also very good for a digital camera, better than some digital video recorders out just now!
