Customer Rating: Summary: BUYER BEWARE. Comment: First impressions; a solid well made camera with lots of features , reasonable price. Picture quality not absolutely top notch but considering £200 price point , quite acceptable. 18x zoom sounds great in theory but must be used with care as image quality suffers towards top of zoom range. Not as versatile as an SLR but still it's nice not to lug around full SLR kit. So far so good or so i thought!
But after having the camera for just over 3 months and having used it no more than 12 times a lens control error message spelled the end for my camera. Dead! Gone! I am now the proud owner of a fuji paperweight!
As for any help i.e. a refund or replacement from the retailer,(not AMAZON). FORGET IT! And same negative response from the manufacturer apart from an under guarantee repair.
Customer Rating: Summary: finepix s8000fd Comment: I've been using this camera since Christmas and have now clocked up around 3000 images, so I feel ready to give it a fair review.
My previous camara was a 35mm Minolta SLR, for which i had 3 lenses and various filters. The s8000 would therefore have to provide clear and detailed images across the entire zoom range to keep me happy and, more importantly, keep my old 35mm back in the cupboard.
Overall I am impressed by the quality of images i have taken - the majority are clear with detail that matches my old minolta. Photographs have good dynamic range and little picture noise. I do miss a few things about my old SLR - zooming using buttons just isn't the same as twisting the lens manually and it doesn't give the same level of control. However, you have to remember that this is a sub - £200 camera that is compact enough to fit in a shoulder bag and weighs less than just the lens alone of my old SLR (and has over twice the zoom range).
I have taken plenty of sharp pictures at full zoom - many at low light but for serious photographs I use a tripod. Some reviewers have complained that they can't get sharp shots on full zoom. Well, at close to 500mm, you would have to spend many hundreds of pounds (think at least £500 for a lens) to get a top-quality result without a tripod. Image stabilisation can only go so far but it certainly helps and should always be kept on.
My only gripes with this camera are 1) A maximum shutter speed of 4 seconds which is restrictively short, 2)no filter thread so you can't use filters, and 3) the quality of results in Auto mode is sub-standard - you need to take a little time and adjust the white balance (it doesn't take long, just make some simple adjustments in program mode). On 'auto' mode I found that most of my photos come out with a faint blue tinge to them - this can be removed in Photoshop, but switching to program mode is a far quicker remedy.
I do miss the creativity and feel of an SLR, and I will eventually replace the S8000 with something like a Nikon D80. For now though, the S8000 is a more than satisfactory stop-gap and at this price I am really pleased with it and would definitely recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: well worth it Comment: i got this camera a couple of days ago and can honestly say i can`t fault it. the 18x zoom is brilliant and on auto mode you cant really go wrong. This is a superb camera as you would expect from finepix but you need to get used to its limitations because there are some, but not worth going on about to be honest. for a good all rounder its great. With its face recognition and image stabilization along with its other features its well worth the price. play with it and enjoy it.
Customer Rating: Summary: 50/50 chance here! Comment: I purchased this camera over 6 months ago , my main use for this camera was for aviation photography so i needed a camera than produces sharp and fast images .... i had read many reviews from websites which mostly all said the same thing ... so i decided to purchase the camera froma amazon, the delivery time was amazing i received it next day at around 9am
so i did my thing and went to the local airport to take shots and thought to myself why are these shots so soft ...... it turns out sadly that it just isnt up to producing sharp effective shots
however i found this camera for day trips and holidays great , and it has so many functions to suit every1
if your looking for a camera to take serious pictures i wouldnt bother but i think its fine for anything else
ive recently upgraded to a canon powershot S5IS
Customer Rating: Summary: good on paper but a let down in use Comment: its a good spec camera but in use its a big let down the "is" dont aways work when you zoom out, we used it at a zoo on holiday and out of 50 photos only five where pin sharp most of them where just not sharp and thats useing the "is"and high shutter speeds the camera has just is not sharp enough its good for day to day snaps but if you want very sharp photos get something else like the fuji 6500fd if you can,its much better even at just six megapixels its way better then this one, mine went back as soon as i got back off my holiday
