Customer Rating: Summary: Awful product - avoid! Comment: I've owned one these devices since Xmas 2007 and it's been a complete pain. The most serious shortcoming is its intermittent refusal to be "seen" when connected to my PC's USB port via the apple USB cable. Because apple doesn't supply a charger the unit eventually loses battery charge altogether. Consequently it can only be revived when plugged into a docking station for a few hours. When it feels like it, the iPod may then sync-up as it should when connected to the PC.
I also own a couple of Creative Zen Vision M MP3 players. I never have any problems with these. The PC always sees them when connected and charges them. I can also drag and drop folders without having the bother of sync'ing with just one PC.
It seems to me that apple has pandered to the lowest common denominator of PC/MAC users. They have made a completely inflexible product. Maybe, because I use PCs and not MACs, Apple is just trying to annoy me.
I will never by another iPod and will always opt for a generic MP3 player which allows me to organise my media how I choose.
It looks nice but that's about it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Want a brick? Buy one of these Comment: I completely disregarded my friends warnings about iPods "I worked in 'a company', we got about 15 returns a day for iPods, for gods sake don't get one" and am now in this situation:
1. The iPod can no longer sync with my music, as the hard disc is faulty after more than 2gb is uploaded.
2. Apple will not accept my iPod is broken.
3. Apple will not replace or attempt to fix my iPod.
4. Despite sending Apple customer services my iPod, they just sent it back stating that it is fine.
I have had my iPod one month and it has sustained NO damage. Be warned. Buy a creative 60gb, they're a bit pricier but I wish I had seen them first
Customer Rating: Summary: Brilliant piece of kit but itunes does require effort. Comment: Like alot of people who have already reviewed, i used to hate ipods & swore i'd never get one! But my massive music collection(45GB, 7148 songs) made it the only option.
I've previously had a 20GB Creative Zen years ago & a Sony 20GB until i bought this, so i'm used to music software. Itunes is a bit more effort but once your willing to take the time to tag your music, i spend a solid week correcting, filling in blanks & adding album artwork, it's worth it. The Coverflow part is excellent when all the artwork is added, but it has to be done manually for the music already contained on your computer, as the artwork & tags can only be got automatically for cd's ripped with itunes. Couple of issues: 1. when you import an album but it mysteriously doesn't show up, turn off the browser so the music is one big list & scroll to the bottom & hey, there it is because more than likely the tracks weren't tagged in the first place. 2. for some reason albums will spilt the odd time, 1 track on it's own & rest together even though the tags are the same, in that case i just deleted them & re-import.
When it comes to videos itunes is strange to, but again with work it can be done. I use a program called 'any video converter' to convert to mp4 video then it can be imported to itunes. The quality when played on the ipod is absolutely class!
The extras are cool, games, quizes, calendar etc, & the screen is brilliant, crystal clear!
I've no complaints whatsoever with the sound quality or the volume level, i put it up near maximum just to see & honestly if it's not enough you must have hearing damage. I did a sound comparison with my Sony & it's negiable difference, slight tone difference probably due to eq settings. But do yourself a favour & invest in descent earphones!
I had reservations in buying this but i have to say i'm very impressed.
Customer Rating: Summary: My first Ipod...and i wouldn't turn back! Comment: I have had mp3 players of course and they were fab, but my last was only 2gb and i ran out of space on it so instead of upgrading to one of the same make but larger memory i thought i'd buy an ipod (against what my parents thought (even though i'm 19 they still try and decide what i buy!)). For the price of the sony one i wanted cos i knew they had excellent sound dynamics, i thought i'd put £10 to it and buy an ipod which had 10x the memory capacity of the sony. Now i have my ipod its great, cos i love watching movies on it and listening to all my favourite tunes, which i now have room for. 80gb, and i have loads of tracks and movies on it already and it's Nowhere near 1/4 full! I managed to get a 2 hour movie on it, using only 500MB which is slightly less than half of 1GB! Now i can watch my movies in bed when i cant sleep or listen to my fave music, absolutely wonderful, i won't go back now i have my ipod!
Customer Rating: Summary: Better than I expected Comment: This is my first Ipod, but third jukebox MP3 player. I've previously steered clear of Ipods on the presumption that they're more a fashion accessory than a serious music player. I've had a Rio Riot and Philips HDD, both of which had some nice features the Ipod doesn't like a radio or recording funcion/optical line in. Both died after two or three years after their hard drives failed (didn't help they got dropped a few times).
But now I've finally come round to Ipod, as my wife loves her 3G nano and now we'll be able to talk to each other in digital music terms.
One downside to this is that all the protected WMAs I bought for previous players won't convert in Itunes. I'll get round that by burning them to cd and then ripping them back to MP3, which is a hassle, but I can live with it.
I'm not a great fan of Itunes - especially the insistence that you only sync the Ipod to one computer as I frequently use two and would really like to be able to be able to use my work mahcine to do things like adjust the volume on tracks I just discovered play too loudly. And this is something you have to do given the stupid volume limit, which means older recordings are barely audible unless at full volume. I considered buying one from the US to avoid that, but then wouldn't have a warranty. My advice, especially if ripping lots of older (pre-2000) cds is to use "get file info" in Itunes to set your volume at least two notches higher on everything and then you can adjust it back down again for tracks that sound distorted. If you don't do this, the volume limit is too low to listen to anything in a noisy environment, like the Tube.
But there are lots of upsides. Once you get the music on there and make all the adjustments you need to make in Itunes (to volume levels, genres etc), this device works like a dream. It's tiny - the smallest jukebox player I've had yet - and has massive storage, which means I'm going to be taking advantage of the video function - my own inflight movies! Battery life is amazing if just listening to music. And I think USB charging is great. I travel a lot on business and have to lug phone charger, laptop charger and mp3 player charger with me (plus adaptors), so now that's one less thing to carry, and I don't need a special charger for the US, just a USB cable to plug into any computer...
The user interface is much better than any other I've used - now I know why people rave about the click wheel. And I thought coverflow was a bit of a gimmick until I realized how much faster it makes browsing my large and increasing music library.
So I'd give this 4 stars. A DAB radio would be a great addition, as would a recording function, but Apple clearly had to choose what they're going to squeeze into such a tiny box, and with 80GB, it's frankly amazing.

The possibilities are endless with the sixth generation of the Apple?s legendary iPod range, the iPod classic. Following on from the fifth generation iPod, the iPod classic has all the same functions as its predecessor, but with an improved, easier-to-use interface. In keeping with the iPod tradition, the iPod classic has both audio and video functions, a very large storage capacity and unprecedented battery life, all packed into a stylish, 100% metal case. Its 80 GB memory holds up to 20,000 music tracks and is the ideal solution for saving your favourite digital entertainment applications. Plus, it delivers great sound quality and has a 2.5? LCD screen for your listening and viewing pleasure. The interface now features the Cover Flow function, which displays all the album covers of each music track, making it very easy to flip through your entire library. Of course, the iPod classic can also play Podcasts, audio books and video games (available for download from the iTunes Store). Finally, the slimline and lightweight iPod classic has an unbelievable 30 hours of battery life when fully charged (in music mode)! The iPod classic is sure to sweep you off your feet!
