Summary: Don't touch with a ten foot pole
Comment: Absolutely sucks. Ever since I got it I've had syncing issues and now I can't get iTunes to recognise it all - having reset, reinstalled etc. more times than I can count. It won't open in disk mode either so I can't fix it that way. Look at the Apple discussions board if you think this is just an isolated issue. Avoid this like the plague - I found a cheap and nasty Chinese import for about £5 that works better than this thing. Save your money and buy anything except an Apple.

Summary: dont use itunes
Comment: this ipod is great if you dont use itunes, which has to be the worst program on the planet,i use a program called DOPISP,which integrates any ipod to windows media player, drag and drop operation, converts wma to mp3,keeps all your ratings, tags, album covers from WMP,it works like a dream, and its fast,do yourself a favour and ditch itunes, the 160gb version is awesome by the way!

Summary: iPod videos - Please read before you purchase
Comment: If you are planning on using your iPod for videos, I recommend you read this first.

I just purchased two new iPod Classic 160s, one for me and one for my wife. I've used Gen 5.5 models before and was VERY happy with them. I
loaded my new Classic with all my videos and used my iPod AV cable (that worked with my older iPod) to connect it to my TV -- I received one of the
nastiest reality slaps ever. When I went to Videos > Settings > TV Out, I couldn't activate the "TV Out" by switching it to "On".

Why?

The reason is because Apple has purposefully locked out this setting and the only way to actually switch this setting to "On" is to connect it to a
new device that has an Apple Authentication chip built into it, e.g. an Apple Universal Dock, along with a cable kit for the Universal Dock.

What does this mean?

Well, it means that Apple made a MAJOR change to their new iPods and didn't tell a single soul (INCLUDING THEIR SUPPORT STAFF!) that you would
no longer be able to watch iPod video on your television -- unless you rectify the problem by purchasing the new chip equipped docking stations,
which apparently don't come cheap at all.

It also means that you are all going to have to lug around a Universal Dock and completely different cable kit from what you were using before
if you want to watch iPod Classic videos on your television.

If you would like to investigate further or read more reviews, just search
"ipod classic tv disabled" on your preferred search engine.

All the best.

Summary: Great until it breaks
Comment: This was the first iPod I'd owned and needless to say I had high expectations. The amount of hype iPods receive is astonishing.

When it arrived, it was everything I'd expected - the battery lasted for ages, I could fit huge amounts of content onto it and it looked pretty cool :) In addition the range of accessories available for the iPod leaves the accessories for any other mp3 player in the dust.

As you might imagine, I took pretty good care of it considering the price (it's a lot of money!) and I was therefore pretty surprised when after only three months of ownership the iPod one day decided to erase all my data, completely out of the blue. Confused, I added it all again thinking maybe it was a glitch or a one-time bug - only to have it all disappear again the next day. I know what you're thinking, maybe I accidentally set it to sync or I didn't plug it in right or whatever - but the second time around I was very careful to add everything properly.

I wasn't too worried though, as I'd heard that Apple had great customer service, so I looked at their website and after a lot of digging I found their service area. "Great!" I thought, I'll sign up for that and get my iPod fixed. But when I tried to find an option for the issue I was having with my iPod in the submission form, I came up short. I ended up submitting it under "power loss" and attempting to explain the issue in the measly 250 characters they give you to expand. A few days later a man from UPS arrived to collect it and I forgot about it and waited for my shiny FIXED iPod to arrive in the post.

So I was a bit surprised when iPod sent it back claiming they "couldn't replicate the issue". I eventually returned it to Amazon and got a full refund, but after that experience I wouldn't advise anyone to bother buying one unless they want it to break down within a few months and have Apple to refuse to do anything about it.

Some other criticisms include:
- The back scratches INCREDIBLY quickly - you just have to put it down for it to be marked.
- Having video for long journeys sounds great until you realise the tiny image is straining your eyes
- A lot of people have issues where the iPod classic will play some songs for a few seconds, and then skip to the next song. Try searching the web for tons of complaints about this
- Sometimes when you're holding your iPod in your hand and skip a song or whatever you can feel the pieces inside moving, which really freaks me out
- Cover flow is cool in concept, but the iPod takes FOREVER to load all the covers and you have to wait for ages for them all to show up, making it pretty much useless
- You can't edit video information for more than one file at a time, so if you're trying to turn a bunch of episodes of a TV Show that are currently marked 'video' into 'tv show', you have to go through them one by one, which takes forever
- It's really quiet - the max volume is much quieter than the max volume on every other mp3 player I've owned

Summary: only 30gig free, time for my review.....
Comment: Thankfully i've not had any technical issues with my iPod,that's the only thing i could imagine would ever make this less than the most amazing gadget i have owned.

If you're prepared to take the time and organise your collection PROPERLY, it really is a dream to use. I use three invaluable programs.

Tag & Rename and Better File Rename - to name files (obviously)
Paint Shop Pro - just to resize covers 200x200

Coverflow works flawlessly, I don't have multiple entries (just tag files correctly)

16,000 files on mine, maybe a slight lag now and again, but no more than a second or two, i can live with that!

Volume not loud enough? how loud do you need it? admittedly you need it over 75% for a decent level outdoors. I use Senheisser CX 300's and rarely have it on full.

Never had any issues with iTunes either, think it's poor? try using Sony Sonic Stage!!

I love it.....

Editorial Reviews:

The possibilities are endless with the sixth generation of the Apple?s legendary iPod range, the iPod classic. Following on from the fifth generation iPod, the iPod classic has all the same functions as its predecessor, but with an improved, easier-to-use interface. In keeping with the iPod tradition, the iPod classic has both audio and video functions, in addition to a very large storage capacity and unprecedented battery life, packed into a stylish, 100% metal case. Its 160 GB memory holds up to 40,000 music tracks and is the ideal solution for saving your favourite digital entertainment applications. Plus, it delivers great sound quality and has a 2.5? LCD screen for your listening and viewing pleasure. The interface now features the Cover Flow function, which displays all the album covers of each music track, making it very easy to flip through your entire library. Of course, the iPod classic can also play Podcasts, audio books and video games (available for download from the iTunes Store). Finally, the slimline and lightweight iPod classic has an unbelievable 40 hours of battery life when fully charged (in music mode)! The iPod classic is sure to sweep you off your feet!
