Customer Rating: Summary: BEWARE!!! Comment: I bought this canon printer having used the IP8500 in work. I bought the IP4500 model because it was more affordable at the time. It works great and prints images very clearly. I generally regard most canon products highly. I have no complaints at all except one annoying issue.
I feel its a pretty big issue and would warn anyone buying this printer to take heed. Replacing the ink cartridges can be a nightmare!
Once the original ink cartridges ran out I bought some new cartridges that I was under the impression were compatible. At first simply replacing them didn't work, I found I had to replace a microchip that comes installed on the original cartridge and put them on the new ones. This also didn't work at first. I then found I had to do this again and press the paper feed button for two seconds to override the settings on the printer. This process worked for a small while.
I was pretty desperate at this point to get it to work properly so I forked out for new ink cartridges from the canon website, costing £10 each. Eventually I got to the point where I have to replace all the ink cartridges at some point or another forcing me to spend another £60 on ink!
I'm a student which means I'm printing a fair amount of work off. I can't afford this option and I'm now trying to sell the printer in the hope of buying a different model that doesn't have microchips installed on the ink cartridges (any suggestions anyone?).
It's understandable why canon prevent their customers using other ink cartridges for their printers but the upshot of all this makes the cost incredibly extortionate.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not compatible with compatibles! Comment: When I first started using this printer I thought Wow! It really is streets ahead of the Epsons I've used over the years. I use my printer a lot for printing cartoons so lots of vibrant colours but it's also excellent for photographs. I was amazed that the original cartridges lasted 4 months! Never been known with the amount of printing I do. The problem came when I had to replace the cartridges. Canon's cartridge prices are scary. So I bought compatibles. They lasted three weeks! The colour is terrible. No amount of head cleaning or fiddling would get my colours anywhere near. So I'm waiting for delivery of genuine Canon cartridges (Nearly fifty quid a set!) and hope that solves the problem. It's obviously not compatible with compatibles. If the genuine cartridges last as long as the originals with the same quality, I'll be a happy man. I'll let you know.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another piece of winning kit from Canon Comment: This is robust and well made printer. With 5 separate ink tanks it tackles all sorts of jobs effortlessly. From documents to photographs. I was amazed at the quality of photo prints in normal mode, then I repeated the print in a higher print mode and it was even better. Plus it prints duplex!! This is a I suppose it's only downside is that it hasn't got card slots, but lets face it most modern PC and Laptops have, plus if you digi camera has pictbridge then you're sorted.
BUY IT
Customer Rating: Summary: A good, solid versatile printer Comment: A grateful thanks to all previous reviewers. On their recommendation, I have bought this machine and not been disappointed. It was all and even more than what was written. Very versatile machine; especially where ink economy is concerned: have done a lot of printing work, and ink levels have hardly moved. This has to be compared to Epson inks, print one page and their cartridge(s) is/are practically empty. It prints quickly, too. A good solid machine.
I would also recommend it to any would be purchaser.
Customer Rating: Summary: inspired and beautiful and fantastic Comment: Beautiful design makes this printer a lovely thing in its own right and what a performance! After years with epsom printers got fed up of what seems endless head cleaning going on and the pricey inks. So researched printers and reviews on amazon and went for this Canon. Glad I did.. easy set up, wonderful prints- really fast and love that you can feed in paper from a tray at bottom as it saves having all that paper hanging out over a top feed tray (but there is that option to!) appreciate that its also a great looking design and quiet and so far extremely reliable. thoroughly reccomend**** (and the inks don't cost too much either!)
