Summary: AA great camera
Comment: I already owned a Nikon 8700 semi-pro camera but was finding it too heavy (I am disabled and not as fit as I was). I had a very clear idea of what I wanted and did a great deal of web searching before settling on the Canon A650 IS. One thing that has always annoyed me was having to take a charger, cable and spare batteries with me wherever I went. The "A" in "A650" stands for AA - yes, it will run on those cheap, easilly available batteries rather than expensive unique fits. I also wanted a build quality similar to the Nikon and this Canon is largely made from magnesium alloy and feels solid in the hand. My final choice must also offer full manual control - the Canon has excellent manual facilities including a very good focus system. My final wish was for an electronic view finder (EVF) as good or better than that fitted in my Nikon. Sadly I was unable to find a camera which offered this facility in combination with my other requirements - Sony do a couple but they seem more like snapshot cameras to me.

Whilst bereft of an EVF the Canon has an adequate optical view finder. It zooms with the 6x zoom lens but sadly does not have any focus ability. Still, an optical view finder is certainly far, far better than most modern cameras - I can't believe that Leica, Nikon and many other quality makers feel a real view finder is no longer needed; I bought my wife a Casio which had no view finder and tried to use it myself. It felt like a toy and was unuseable in bright sun - need I say more.

I have now taken several hundred pictures with the new Canon and am more than impressed with the quality. It is amazing at light and shade and the macro ability is breath taking with focussing almost to 1:1 (the lens almost touching the objective).

The menu system is good and makes it easy to access all the bells and whistles - face recognition, image stabalisation, semi-optical zoom boost, programmeable button and custom mode to name a few. Taking everything into consideration, this is a mature camera, more reminiscent in handling of a film compact, which is capable of results easily as good as any DSLR. I would like to see raw mode and, as I have said, an EVF, but it would be very difficult to better this camera without spending several times as much.

Summary: TERRIFIC CAMERA
Comment: I purchased this because of my frustration at the difficulty of using my previous point-and-shoot in sunny conditions. There aren't that many cameras around now with viewfinders. The electronic viewfinder on this one is absolutely fine, and the swivel screen is also useful on occasions. Everything else on the camera works very well. The only gripe is opening and closing the battery/SD card compartment - after a month of almost daily use I still find it temperamental. But at this price -it's a fantastic camera and you won't regret buying it.

Summary: Great product, great seller
Comment: I may not know the difference between my pixels and ISOs, but have always been able to recognize a great camera (and picture) when I see one - don't ask me how. Aesthetically, this camera looks and feels very solid indeed, but is nowhere near as big as some reviewers have suggested (in fact, it's just as compact as my former great purchase from amazon - a Fujifilm with 7 million pixels). It is slightly heavier, however, but what do you expect after loading a product with 4 AA batteries? Also, although packed with countless features (most of which I will probably never use), it is remarkably easy to operate (and if I find it easy to operate, you should consider it really easy). The swivel-type reversible LCD screen is quite an attractive feature too, and folds away very neatly either way.

Regarding the pictures, I have only taken a few indoor ones so far, but they have been fantastic - whether on the LCD screen or when trasferred to the laptop.

The Marketplace seller, "Warehouse-deals" (which I didn't know was a subsidiary of amazon itself), is also to be commended, and not for the first time. On at least two occasions now, they've sent me brand new (yes, brand new) items even though they were described as "Used-like new." In this case, the only "defect" turned out to be an oval coffee-like stain on the edge of the box, which they described as "damage" to the outer packaging.

Summary: Outstanding picture quality and functions for the price!
Comment: Hello! I received this camera yesterday for when i go on holiday and ive got to say im amazed.

When i first got it out of the box i thought it felt very light and cheap when compared to my older Powershot A95 5MP but after a few minutes of using it i realised it has excellent build quality, its been made with lighter materials. I wouldnt say its a massive camera but with functionality that can match a 600 quid DSLR camera i cant moan, its not like camera enthusiasts with DSLR cameras are able to carry them around in their pockets.

I also bought a 8GB memory card and it works like a charm, a step up from the supplied 32mb card lol.

The startup time is insane, less than a second to be ready to take a photo and there are so many different focus options. I am particularly amazed with the face recognition option. It can search for heads in a photo and auto focus on them, i then started messing about, i sat about 5 meters away from a framed photo i have and it picked out the heads without a problem, its also funny when you point the camera at dvd covers etc with people on them, it must have some seriously clever hardware and software in it.

To take continuous 12.1mp photos at maximum quality it can do about 1 every 1.5 seconds, and oddly enough lowering the quality and megapixels doesnt increase the photo speed. I later discovered the iso3500 (or something rediculous) setting which allows you to take a rediculous amount of photos very quickly, must be about 4 a second. This setting will be ideal for photographing fireworks if i ever go back to Orlando.

There is also a scene selection mode with options for practically every environment, aquarium, underwater, you name it. All are very impressive, theres more complicated stuff like 1st and 2nd curtain flash (no idea) shutter priorty / iso priority (also no idea).

A lot of information is also saved with each photo, and you can specify whether you want to see this after each photo, brightess histogram etc. Theres also an option that makes the photographed image flash in areas that might be a bit over exposed so you know whether it might be necessary to take a nother photo with the flash off etc. There are guides and grids that can be overlayed across the screen to help you frame images etc. Theres also a very impressive video mode, allowing you to cut copy trim etc. With the 8gb card inserted it said i could record for 67 minutes, it must use huge a massive amount of space due to the quality of the video. That reminds me, after you have taken a photo, you can manually remove red eye from photos taken, crop and trim them to lower resolutions etc.

Id type more but theres so much i could talk about!

Amazing camera for the price, i highly recommend it.

Summary: Moved from Olympus to Canon
Comment: Very pleased with my A650 IS. Very good value for money performance well outside tis price bracket. My favourite features are the quick start-up and the excellent battery life.

I agree with the other reviewers that it is a bit plasticky and I think that the silver finish is largely to blame. To me it looks cheap and it certainly scratches easily. A friend has the previous model (can't remember the number) in black which looks fresher than mine.

The basic controls are fairly intuitive, but reading the user manual is a must to get any use out of the variety of features. It would be better if the memory card could be removed without opening the battery door, as this usually causes me to drop the batteries. The USB lead is a standard size however and worked rapidly for me on XP without the need to install any software.

For me the drawbacks to this model are few; overall very pleased.

Editorial Reviews:

Canon proudly pesents the PowerShot A650 IS, a worthy successor to the famous A640. Canons cameras have always stood out from the crowd, but this camera takes that concept to a new level thanks to its powerful zoom and efficient optical image stabiliser! The Power Shot A650IS is fully equipped with an impressive 12.1 megapixel sensor and a 6x optical zoom, allowing you to reframe and print your creations without losing any quality. Its sensitivity has been increased to 1600 ISO to limit the use of the flash indoors. Focusing has never been easier, thanks to the face detection system which is great for your group photos. Among its other features, youll find a large 2.5 TFT screen, an amazing 1 cm macro mode, a range of creative functions, such as the My Colours settings and different shooting modes like programme, aperture and speed priority. There are even manual modes to give you total control over your cameras settings. The PowerShot A650 IS from Canon beats the competition on all fronts and brings digital photography within your reach.
