Customer Rating: Summary: Sandisk have created a winner Comment: The Sandisk 4GB and 8GB U3 USB Memory Sticks are fantastic. Fact.
If you want a super-solid, ultra-rugged memory stick, why are you buying black plastic memory sticks and then complaining about them being plastic?
Buy a cruzer titanium, ironkey, or Corsair Survivor if you want a memory stick which can survive combat in Iraq.
The U3 feature is certainly not a "gimmick". The ability to function on any computer and not leave a trace of your activities is not a "gimmick", but a must have in today's information overload and data-mining society. I advise using Firefox 3 with the U3 feature.
I've seen the U3 8GB being quoted at $59.99 direct from Sandisk in America and £20 at various retailers in the UK. At £9.45 from a marketplace seller, it was a bargain. Yes, the delivery is a bit penal, but in the end it's worth it. I'm considering the 16GB at £30 from Amazon now too.
You won't regret this purchase, it does what it says on the tin.
Customer Rating: Summary: Be aware hidden software can cause issues Comment: I have the 4GB version and when trying to use with a photo print ordering machine - the machine couldn't load images - prob as the Cruzer tries to mount a disc image on the machine which it was probably barred from doing
even reformatting the Cruzer doesn't get to these hidden files - so I cannot make into a plain and simple storage device which just works
wish I'd gotten a different memory stick
Customer Rating: Summary: Handy retractable case Comment: Just to add to all the other reviews, the whole device retracts into its case protecting the USB connector. This avoids the need for a separate cover which can easily be mislaid.
Customer Rating: Summary: Plastic case is fine with me Comment: I own the 4GB version with the identical plastic case and retracting USB. The plastic case has survived months of continuous use, and even kept working after I accidentaly kicked and broke it while it was in one the floor level USB slots and snapped, the plastic case was able be clicked back together and now is as good as new. Even the retracting thing still works. For the first couple of days after I first bought it, I kept accidentally retracting it by gripping the white slidey thing while plugging it in, but am now well used to it and hugely prefer it to having a cap which I always lose within a week of ownership of devices like this. When plugged into a powered USB2 hub it goes like greased lightning. Only annoying thing for me is actually the U3 CD thing which I never use but which keeps coming up with a list of "what do you want to do with this device" everytime I insert into a PC running Windows. Works perfectly for Mac however where the U3 thing is not such an annoyance, easy to transport files from one OS to the other, and read and write on both without a reformat being necessary.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bad build quality lets this device down. Comment: I bought this drive because it looked like a solid unit which would be pleasant to use on a day to day basis. The drive itself works fine and has useful features such as the U3 capability. This allows the drive to run applications without installing them to the computer itself. I can see this being useful in University / Office environments where you aren't allowed to install software.
Sadly the build quality is less than perfect. It has no neck strap to allow you to carry it or wear it which was a disappointment. My previous Sandisk Micro drive had an excellent strap so why have they now left them out? Also, the drive rattles if you shake it and the button to retract the USB plug isn't even smooth. When you put the drive in it barely fits into the USB port and clunks into place like it's just broken something. The drive is also a little larger than the old Sandisk Micros.
All in all I was so disappointed that I'm now returning it for a refund. Personally I think a drive has to be pleasant to use given that it will probably be used daily for many years. I should have heeded the warnings of the other reviewers and I recommend you do so as well.

Cruzer Micro is ReadyBoost compliant. ReadyBoost makes your PC running Windows Vista faster by using the USB drive as temporary storage.
