Customer Rating: Summary: Not Good for purpose Comment: The main reason I bought one of these was to transfer old VHS tapes to DVD, but I could never get the tapes to play.
A complete waste of money!
Customer Rating: Summary: video poor Comment: My first recorder was awful could not play back any of my old tapes, rang Sony who did not help at all, sent back to Amazon who quickly sent out replacement unit. Second unit ok- video wise not perfect though. The one saving grace is the dvd part which does its job once you work out the timings for each speed.
I would not recommend this unit. The first Sony i have to give a thumbs down to.
Customer Rating: Summary: Do not buy ! Comment: This machine has no redeeming features. VCR playback is very poor, with a distinct 'warble' when playing music - and this does transfer to the dvd copy. The pause control is exceptionally bad and appears to select when to stop and start recording at random - it will never do so at the point you selected. Between every individual section you copy from VHS, you will also get an excerpt from whatever happens to be on tv at the time you're copying - again, due to a sloppy pause function. When viewing the dvds you've made from your old videos, you'll find that picture and sound are frequently out of sync. A complete waste of money.
Customer Rating: Summary: VCR Element Doesn't work Comment: Bought this in March 2008 to be able to watch VHS and DVD's, plus transfer between the two formats. The DVD element works fine; however the VHS part doesn't!
Tried using brand new VHS tapes, which was a slight improvement. Pre-recorded (commercial) tapes wouldn't play back without substantial tracking interference or dropping out completely to a blank grey screen. Tried transferring known good quality DVD to a brand new tape and this was 80-90% successful but with periodic dropping out to the blank grey screen. So there's a fault, or design problem, with the analogue VHS part of this equipment.
So I don't recommend buying it!
Surprising that someone like Sony could produce something as poor as this.
