Customer Rating: Summary: Data Loss after less that a week. Comment: It's never fair to judge on a single drive, but this has failed within a week, taking some important backups with it. There is no support tools via Formac and what good is a warranty? Users want their data back, not a replacement drive. Very poor, I'll stick with freecom from now on.
Customer Rating: Summary: Formac 250GB Disc Mini Comment: I just wanted to say that I recieved the Formac 250gb External hard drive
from Amazon today came in a nice box that is obviously designed to be
displayed on a shelf. There was only a USB 2.0 cable included and I expected to recieve a Y cable as well, as some reviews said it was included in the box - but it wasn't. This means that I might have a problem connecting to some computers which don't provide enough power out of a single USB port, my laptop and desktop are both almost new so I shouldn't run into this problem. If you require either the Y cable or a seperate power supply they are available.
So firstly I connected to single USB 2.0 port on the desktop machine and Vista went off and installed drivers no problem I then went into disc management and created and formatted a 232.8GB partition to NTFS using the quick format option. The drive itself is quite small and very light and when placed on top of a 3.5" IDE drive it is smaller all round and thinner. I am pleased with its size and the fact I don't need a seperate power supply.
Then I tried to copy a 3.42GB video capture onto it, it took 2m 15s which
works out to about 25mb/s or a full 200mbit/s and about the same in the
other direction, this is a lot faster then a 100mbit network connection
which can only manage around 6mb/s. I think though that if you transfer a larger amount of data the transfer rate will slow down to around 15mb/s or 120mbit/s and thats what the manufacturer quotes.
Later I connected it to my new laptop with no problem and transferred a 13.8gb image onto it in 11m 44s that works out to 19.60mb/s still impressive, but I think as the files sizes get larger it gets slower but perhaps no lower then 10mb/s which is still fast enough for DV capture.
Customer Rating: Summary: What a great product! Comment: I was recommended to get one of these by a colleague. I'm glad I did. I'd been planning on backing up my laptop for ages, but hadn't got around to it, now I have this I can do it every day, and I also use the drive to transfer work files to and from the office when I'm not using my laptop. The drive is very quick, and worked straight out of the box, but I have reformatted since. I'd thoroughly recommend this drive to anyone who needs a drive to back up their files to.
