Customer Rating: Summary: Dodgy eSATA connection Comment: Tried two different drives, delivered a week apart. Both worked fine with USB but the first one would not connect at all via eSATA and the second one would only do so if the plug was forced very hard into the socket.
Looks like they were part of a bad batch. Be prepared.
After wasting so much time, have ordered a Seagate drive instead.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good Storage Solution Comment: Got a room full of DVD's. These are great for storing all your films. Annoying LED at the front is the only gripe. Not a great system storage bacup as this is just too slow. But overall perfomance it does exactly what you want for a home storage solution. More than four of these connected will slow down your PC as the resonse time for your PC to check on the intergrity of the drives is painful. But all in all not a bad solution and a good price for what you get.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fast Comment: I have just installed this. Seems excellent so far. The using the eSATA connection it is fast - about twice as fast as a USB or Firewire drive. This contasts with the Seagate FreeAgent Pro (750 GB) drive that I also own. The Seagate has an eSATA connection which is no faster than USB2. This is not just "perception". I have carried out timings by copying a 1GB file to and from each drive (plus also an older Maxtor 320 GB usb/firewire drive). - The Western Digital My Book is twice as fast as the other two, which are about the same as eachother.
Copying a 1GB file between the "My Book" and the internal hard disk on my PC gives write speed = 288 Mega bits per second and read speed = 364 Mega bits per second. (Note the SATA interface in my PC is the older 1.5Gb/s version. I never expected to get close to the theoretical speed, so 364 Mb/s seems good to me.)
Cannot comment on the bundled software, which I do not intend to install. I bought the drive for use with my existing bacakup solution (EMC Retrospect - a good SOHO backup solution which I use to backup several home PCs onto these external drives).
Customer Rating: Summary: Not as good as i'd hoped . . . Comment: I already had a Maxtor 500Gb external drive which was usb only. This to me was quite restrictive as i rarely achieved above 20MBs transfer rate.
This Western Digital drive i thought would mean i could finally utilise my eSATA port, increase my transfer rates and increase my storage capacity all in one go.
So far I'm disappointed with it. The storage space is fine, no problems. But the transfer rates ar apalling! Using the usb connection the transfer rate doesn't go above 12Mbs and the using the Firewire connection the transfer speed doesn't go above 16Mbs. (Both tests done using the bundled leads and a variety of file types and sizes)
To further irritate me i can't get my pc (XP or Vista) to recognise the drive when connected using an eSATA connection! This was the reason i paid and extra £20 over the normal USB My Book.
The included software is another irritation and is possibly the slowest back up software i've ever seen, it took 4 hours to backup 10Gb of data - When you're trying to back up just over 600Gb this is rediculous. I uninstalled the software and used copy an paste, then i had my backups done overnight.
Also be aware that this drive is FAT32 formatted on arrival which limits the file size you can store to 4GB, this is yet another irritation to me as i regularly store 60 minutes of Digital video with file sizes 10Gb+. A full reformat to NTFS would sort this out though.
I really wanted this to be an ideal solution - it looks great, it very quiet and the led on the front is discrete but the poor transfer rates and lack of eSATA recognition force me to take points away.
I will try a couple more eSATA leads just in case it is the lead that is to fault and update this review. I'm also contacting WD to check if there are any settings i need to tweak to increase the transfer speeds, otherwise i'll be returing this on and getting another maxtor basics 500gb . . .
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent storage space watch out for 30 day aplication trial. Comment: Just plug and play! I use this mainly to back up documents, music and general files. But there's loads of space for movies and other stuff. I use it effortlessly with either XP of Vista operating systems. After the 30 days, trial for some applications, you have to fork out another around £16.00 if you want to use the system to its full potential. Unless you need to back up your system automaticaly and continiously, don't bother! I think, for the money, it should have been included as basic software. All in all, an excellent product: sleek and dynamic!
