Customer Rating: Summary: Great Firewire Performance Comment: I was using the Essential version of the Western Digital My Book, but after accumulating three 500GB models I thought I would just upgrade to a single 1TB model instead. As a Mac Mini user, I was amazed at how much faster FireWire 400 transfers are over USB 2.0--it takes under three mins to move 4GB of data to this drive. It's also a lot quieter than my old Essential drive, fits in well with the Mac and is future-proofed with FireWire 800 support. I cannot recommend the Studio edition highly enough.
Customer Rating: Summary: A good purchase Comment: PLUSES. Very stylish. Reasonably quiet. It does not over-heat. Versatile connections (USB+Firewire400+Firewire800+eSATA). Good price. I've had it for about a month now, and it's working fine with Time Machine on my Mac.
MINUSES. It does have its occasional hick-ups (sometimes it does not come up in Finder); disconnecting the cable and reconnecting it back again always solves the problem. No software CD: all software is pre-recorded on the disk (so you may want to make a backup copy of all that, then again, all software is available for download from Western Digital website).
ALL IN ALL. Not pefect, but very VERY good value for money! I am quite happy with my purchase.
Customer Rating: Summary: Performance figures (OS X & Xbench) Comment: Performance figures for this using a MacBook Pro using XBench. I have also included a comparative run against my MBP's internal 5400rpm Fujistu SATA 150 drive (otherwise that uncached 4K read speed may scare you!).
In short: (fastest) Firewire 800 > eSATA > FW400 > USB2.0 > Internal drive (slowest)

Customer Rating: Summary: Died after 16 hours, don't waste your time with it. Comment: Out of the box, I was disappointed with the cheap "silver colour" plastic housing which doesn't really fit the my new iMac. It is significantly louder than the iMac's internal drive - not ideal.
Having completed a 64Gb Time Machine backup, and copied across my iTunes stuff I went off to bed.
Sadly the drive wouldn't restart, and no amount of plugging / unplugging on/off type shenanigans would revive it.
A call to WD helpline (at 11:30) revealed they were closed.
Already packaged up to return for and exchange, but tempted by a Time Capsule...
In the BRIEF period it worked, I was impressed with the speed (Firewire800) and the flashing lights on the housing.
Customer Rating: Summary: nothing but trouble Comment: bought this back in january, for the first 2 months it was a dream then it started crashing, 5 minutes on then it announces that windows delay write failed and shuts down.
i emailed WD customer service for a replacement so they told me to send it in, I would only recive a replacement after they recived it or i have to supply my credit card details for an immediate replacement, for insurance which is fair enough. i spent £20 sendin it back on top of the £189 i bought it for, i recived my replacement 9 days later and now im being threatened that they are going to deduct $455 from my credit card in the next 10 days. I got an email from their warehouse saying they recived it however they say that the systems wont update until its recived in the service center for testing (i have news its faulty of course its not going to be working). its overall been a bad experience with the replacements eSATA not working and stress of my CC being charged for summat thats out of my control. overall product 3/5 service 0/5. NEVER USE WD AGAIN.
