Summary: Very simple gargantuan storage
Comment: Excellent. I use it for backup and storage of photos videos, etc and it works very well. Follow advice in other reviews: reformat, don't use shipped software, etc and it works quickly and very quietly. I have just bought a second which says it all really.

Summary: Dart vader or what?
Comment: Slightly menacing presence with its flashing blue light. Easy to set up providing you remember to reformat to NTFS - never mind about saving preloaded software, Vista Backup and Restore does just fine when you configure it to recognise this drive. Vader-like humming but really quiet and never gets hot (unlike the Iomega drive it replaced, which could fry eggs). So far (after two weeks) no problems (unlike Iomega which would turn itself off overnight from time to time). Still can't work out whether it is safe to stand on its side - seems to me that dust can too easily enter the ventilation holes on top if placed in recommended vertical position. What's with some reviewers who can't work out the mains plug? Morceau de gateau mon vieux.

Summary: Useless before it even gets installed
Comment: Following all instructions properly I plugged in the device and the found new hardware icon appeared..then my PC froze. I tried again in different USB ports, also leaving my PC frozen for an hour to see if it would unfreeze, no success. My system is completely virus/spyware free so I thought the item was defective and got a replacement from Amazon-the same thing happened. I contacted Western Digital for support and after FIVE days they got back to me unable to help at all. I have now returned the item to Amazon for a full refund - I advise you to not waste your time with this or endure the stress I went through.

Freezing your PC upon plug in, when all other USB devices work fine...shoddily designed, lack of testing and a rushed product. Internet forums are full of how this device not only randomly freezes and dies but just never works. Avoid

Summary: The reliability of this drive
Comment: I should have listened to all the warning voices on the net about the reliability of Western Digital drives. I purchased one of these in December 2007 and without any warning yesterday, 5 months to the day, it stopped working. I gather, from hours trawling through US websites, that WD have a serious problem with the "firmware", whatever that is, which sometimes causes these drives to keel over. I am sure Amazon will replace it, as their after sales service is always 5 star, but that is hardly the point. I had stored all my home movies and photographs on this wretched drive, NOW ALL LOST. Silent, good looking and cool running it most certainly is BUT the stories are right, it is unreliable. Do not for one moment be tempted to buy it.

Summary: Will it suit you
Comment: This piece of kit is simple to use with a very shallow learning curve. I have just backed up three macs using time machine, I then cleaned up my hard drives making my macs work more efficiently.

I accessed my WD which identified each mac and allowed me to look at my macs as they used to be, brilliant.

Why only four stars? If I was to drop the WD I'm sure it would shatter into a zillion pieces and then I would be stuffed.
