Summary: If you want a reliable hard drive then don't buy this!
Comment: I had one of these for about 2 months. All went well and it seemed to be doing the job. Then I lost the drive Icon from my PC and discovered the drive was dead and smoke was coming out. I contacted the customer service dept who have been less than helpful. I wanted the drive repaired and the data left intact. I would have thought this would be possible as it had only overheated and the motor needs replacing. Lacie did not want to know. They will repair but will erase all the data (why?). Data recovery is not covered by the guarantee and could cost as much as £500 (nearly 10x the purchase price). Even after asking several times they have not provided any details of how I can return the drive for repair. I have given up with this one and will replace with a Seagate drive.

Summary: poor manufacturing and poor customer services
Comment: I bought 4 lacie drivers since 2002, they all now are dead. They might look good but the manufacturing standard is less than desirable. Try another manufacturer if you can. This is my experience with their customer services: After I had wrote to them that my new hard disk was broken and had lot's of important files on it. And I need to recover the files they said even if I send to their recommended places and paid for the recover that what happens "If the drive is sent a data recovery service and the case is opened then the warranty on the drive will be voided, because the warranty void seal will be broken" so they send you a bad manufacturer driver you pay to recover the files and the warranty is lost. One of their main supplier of Hard Disk is Wester Digital and they have a complete different policy on broken hard disk and recovery files. Bear that in mind when you buy your Hard Disk. Money is not that important when your family photos are gone!

Summary: Do not buy from here.
Comment: I wish I had read mr allen prices review before buying this, the drive came with no means to connect to a UK powersupply and I had to go out and buy a european adapter. you order form a UK site you expect UK goods, or at least some warning in the item description. The is the 2nd time I have ordered with pixmania, and the 2nd time I am astonished at their dire lack of service.
The drive , ive used before and it is excelent, but DO NOT BUY from here, check elsewhere.
"Allan price:
I ordered two LaCie drives. They arrived promptly and in good condition, but without any means of connecting them to a UK mains supply.
I emailed the supplier, Pixmania, to ask them to rectify the situation. Their reply contained the words "I would like to kindly inform you that; Pixmania warehouses are based in Paris France manufacturers here in France do not supply us with the UK power cable".
This is irrelevant to me. I live in the UK, ordered via Amazon UK and I expect the goods to be fit for purpose in the UK. "

Summary: plug (EU/UK)...
Comment: very good value for money - not that quality is compromised at all!
when ordering it, i was almost put off by reading reviews about it coming only with a EU plug... however, i still ordered it, and it came with a UK plug - so all is fine, dont let it put you off.

have had it for a while and all is fine

Summary: A lovely quality Hard Drive Well Pleased.
Comment: On first impressions i was very pleased with the build quality of my new laCie hard drive.

Constructed out of top quality die cast black aluminium, unlike other reviwers i recieved everything in the box which should include the mains adaptor and usb lead along with the small install guide.

As everyone has said as soon as you plug the usb drive into your computer and power it up the hard drive icon should appear on your desktop.

In my case it appeared first time but because all the user instructions are already downloaded onto the hard drive LaCie tell you to save them on another drive for safe keeping.Once you have done this formatting the drive to your chosen format is simplicity in itself.

This drive doesnot have an internal fan but unlike some reviewers mine didnot become overly warm.

Would i recommend you buy a LaCie drive on first impressions, very much so as the build quality is most impressive and i think the drive is decent value for what you are given.

Some have complained the drive doesnot have a on off switch, well why does one need it in the first place. The device should boot up automatically everytime you start your computer and a separate switch is only more to go wrong on what is a pretty straightforward drive.

If the drive had needed a switch im sure LaCie would have provided it with one and because it doesnot have a switch it is not required.

Editorial Reviews:

LaCie's Desktop Hard Disk is a reliable data storage solution. This external hard drive is compact and lightweight for easy transport.
