Customer Rating: Summary: Good sound, pity about the on/off switch Comment: Sounds really good. Perfect for taking along when traveling. Batteries last a couple of weeks or so if only using an hour or two a day. The fact that it is mono sound short should not put you off. After all it will fit in your pocket. However, I really do not like the on/off switch mechanism. It sucks. Putting an elastic band around the rotating bezel that operates the switch makes it so much easier to operate (though it still feels gritty). The battery cover also keeps falling off (now stuck on with tape for fear or losing the cover). An LED light indicating when it is switched on wouldn't go amiss. Overall, it's very good and there's not much else out there that's so neat and compact, yet sounds good for the price. Just a pity that it reached the market with such an awful on/off mechanism.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best purchase I have made recently! Comment: This is an excellent little speaker. I was initially sceptical about how much I would use it, but having owned it for a few months, it now goes everywhere with me. It is so much more convenient than my mains powered speaker dock and the sound is just as good. I find it is great for hooking up to my laptop when watching iPlayer, and comes into its own connected to my ipod when out in the garden or on weekends away. It gives out an amazing sound for its size and the battery life seems to go on forever. I have been using it on and off for a few months on the same set of standard alkalines, and they still haven't run out.
If you are looking for a small speaker with excellent sound quality that is truly portable, this is the one to get. For the money it can't be beaten!
Customer Rating: Summary: good at the price Comment: Let's not get over-excited about this; the original UK list price was something like £40 which was ridiculous but for £17.99 it's not bad. This is my 3rd set of Altec Lansing speakers, I already own an IM9 and IM500 but I wanted something to plug into my laptop when I give presentations and lectures so the Orbit looked ideal, which it is.
The sound quality is good considering the size and the volume goes up quite high but don't be misled by promises of a surprising amount of bass - there really is no bass response to speak of although the sound quality varies depending on the surface you put the Orbit on.
I agree with all the complaints about the fiddly controls; it's difficult to open the back to put the batteries in and it's even harder to turn it on and off. Maybe everyone at Altec Lansing has small, clammy hands so they can grip polished surfaces easily but I've got big hands and I bought this in the middle of winter when my hands were cold and dry and there is absolutely nothing to get a grip on! Both my other Altec Lansing speakers have a timer so if they detect no input for a couple of minutes they switch themselves off which might have been nice for the Orbit but every nice-to-have, like an LED to tell you it's on, or a mains power option has been sacrificed to keep the cost down.
Pros: cute, cheap and loud.
Cons: impossible to operate for anyone over the age of 12.
Customer Rating: Summary: For the money it's excellent Comment: For the price this is great value for money. I wasn't expecting fantastic sound quality at this price-point but it's deffo useable. I use mine with my iPod Touch in the bathroom for when I'm shaving/showering and I'd happily take it away for use in a hotel room or if I went camping.
Build quality- it's mainly plastic- the power switch is a plastic "collar" you twist for on and off. Powered by 3x AAA batteries.
The lead is about 4 inches long. It's hard-wired into the speaker housing and there's a narrow slot around the outside of the case to wrap the cable into and a little holder to tuck the plug into.
Volume's fantastic for the size- there's no volume control on the unit though, to adjust you'll have to use your player.
For the money, I'd deffo recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not fit for purpose Comment: Sounded really good to begin with. Good sound quality and volume. But after a few hours use it would keep cutting out. The only way to stop it cutting out is to turn the volume down. This carries on untill its so quiet you can't hear it and so don't notice it cutting out.
Really wouldn't recommend
