Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic Amazon service and Nuvi GPS Comment: I have spent 5 days in reviewing different web sites and contacting vendors in order to make a comparison to opt the optimal GPS. Finally, I decided to go with Garmin Nuvi 760 and without any doubt it was the right decision.
It took me from Manchester to Oban (Scotland) once I opend the box without doing any preparation except uploading some MP3 songs.
Really, it was an excellent device.
If any body ask me about which GPS to buy, I would immidatley say Garmin 760.
Note: only small point that I have to mention. During my trip to scotland, I have found some differences between what 760 tell me and the real situation. I think I may need to download the latest map. Anyway, I have contacted Garmin and been waiting their reply.
With Garmin 760, you will enjoy your trip. ;-)
Customer Rating: Summary: Nuvi 760 replaces Road Angel 6000 Comment: The road angel got in to the habit of loosing its way, the second unit I had because the first failed within warrenty. This Nuvi is just fantastic in comparison, gets a fix in a few seconds and the traffic updates really work well to replan the route. I have done Portsmouth to Amersham return 10 times now and its taken me on 4 different routes based on traffic information. Scooting off the M25 earlier than the A3 junction because of delays takes me down m3 then sometimes the A32, delays confirmed by radio 2. Its mapping and use is better than Tom Toms, bluetooth hands free works almost instantly with my E90. Even sorts out the route the ferry should take to the Isle of Wight. Absoloutly the best sat nav I have seen to date.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: After many satisfied years with a Garmin StreetPilot III, it finally broke down and rather than get it repaired I opted to get up to date with a Nuvi 760.
Amazon delivery was, as it always has been for me, outstanding.
The Nuvi760 powered up straight from the box, I got it linked via the usb into Garmin web site for registration, which then downloaded some program updates, and we were ready to go.
After updating my existing Mapsource program (used in StreetPilotIII) I was able to download my previously stored waypoints without any trouble at all. I wasn't looking forward to re-entering all these, so this came as a nice surprise when it worked first time.
Fitting to the car was simplicity itself, and within a minute the satellites were found, the FM traffic updates were in, and I had a test drive to one of my waypoints.
After so long with a 2D display I was surprised how quickly I adapted to the 3D view, although if 2D is your thing you can always switch to it as an option.
Route calculation is fast and the route guidance, which now include speaking out street names, is a delight to use.
The optional extra of speed camera notification (3 months free I believe) surprised me at first, and the notification on the screen is a little small, but it was all accurate as far as I could see.
The only thing I miss from the StreetPilot III is that during routing, you could opt for a display which showed you your speed. On the Nuvi, you have to move to a different display for this. However, this is a really minor point.
I found the menu relatively straight forward to learn, is a lot easier to use than the StreetPilotIII, and is very similar to it's comptetitors.
So far I have not looked at the frilly bits of mp3 playing, picture displays, bluetooth phone integration, PoI downloads, I will get round to these in time.
As a navigation device, I am really pleased with it and have no hesitation giving it an early 5 stars.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bad news Comment: If you have ever used a recent sat nav, this device will disappoint. It was purchased for a holiday in Europe and its address database is embarrassingly bad - without the use of Google Earth to locate our destinations, we would never get anywhere.
Sure it is small and nice to look at, but to recharge you need to plug into car or computer (or buy a mains adapter as an extra). The interface is OK, but not greatly logical and the user guide is around 4 pages.
Traffic? Well, I live near a city and have yet to find a signal...
For Mac users, there is no way to update the software built in. I am not a great Tom Tom fan, but they are far superior to this piece of Junk.
Not fit for purpose is my most honest description - returning to Amazon immediately.
Customer Rating: Summary: Well worth the money Comment: I spent ages in choosing my second device after my TomTomGO 300 failed following three years of heavy use.
I guess if you are on this page, you want a relatively advanced GPS as there are many machines which are cheaper and dont have the extras provided in 760 which has bluetooth handsfree, europe mapping, FM transmission (can transmit device sound to your car speakers when you choose same fm channel on both), wide screen, traffic services (lifetime subscription)
One can get a good garmin device for under 100 with UK maps and without added extras mentioned above (Garmin 200 is only £89 and appears very good)
now for these extras the main competition is with tomtom 720T as you may have found out already
both were priced near £220 when I compared
I looked at garmin 360t, 660t, 760 and TomTom 720T, last two being my final choices.
Glad I chose garmin 760 over tomtom 720T but both have good and bad points
the main issues in my view:
Garmin 760T: map accuracy greater, weight 176 grams, smaller (tomtom720T is 220gm, slightly bulkier)
garmin screen is not cluttered at all
But I definitely miss TomTom's screen display of distance and time to destination with a compass pointer, next turn in graphics like 2nd exit and other customizable bits that is lacking in garmin (760 only shows arrival time and next turn)
Not having a lot of info on Garmin's screen may make driving safe as you dont keep looking at it to check how far you are from your destination and what is your speed and comparing your speedometer with Satnav(speedo is less accurate than GPS devices)
Garmin only shows arrival time so no major reason to fix your stare on screen and this may be good for safe driving.
Nevertheless speed and distance details are available if you touch arrival time.
garmin's POI are great (much more accurate and useful than tomtom 720t)
its FM trransmitter can also transmit phone's sound (not in tomtom)
garmin's menu is a lot simpler and less cluttered than tomtom
garmin's traffic service also better than tomtom, but tomtom voice quality is superior and less synthetic and there are more choices. Even the speaker output is more in TomTom.
overall, both great but garmin is my choice for simpler menu, accurate maps and physical form but I feel none of them is a bad choice.
Good luck with your buy.
