Customer Rating: Summary: Underwater Love Comment: I bought this camera in NYC for my holiday - the panorama setting worked wonders up the empire state building as it merges the photos together in the camera itself, and the underwater settings were amazing when i went on the caribbean. the underwater quality is great for messing about in the pool and taking shots in high vis water.
it is THE perfect holiday camera.
and it's drop proof for those evening when you've had one too many cocktails. what more could a girl ask for?!
note - i recommend buying a floating strap so that if you drop it underawater it will go to the surface, and some lense cleaner so you can clean and protect the lense from the chlorine/salt water.
ENJOY!
Customer Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect Point And Shoot Comment: This is a great camera.
This is the first point and shoot I've purchased - previously I've used pseudo-SLR cameras (10x-12x optical zoom jobbies).
The main reasons for my choice were the waterproofing, weather proofing and general hardiness: I SCUBA dive, ski and like to have a camera with me when out on the cans (for those memorable moments you can't remember the next day!)
Despite being slightly frightening the first time I put it underwater (it just seemed wrong to pop a normal looking camera under the water), it has worked a charm, with some cracking shots from a recent family holiday to Hawaii.
All of the basic modes work as well as expected (both over and underwater), and the panoramic mode is sensational - you can stitch two or three shots together in the camera to get a panoramic view of something. Couple this with a wider view than you normally get, and you're up for some great photos from such a small machine. Just remember to get a memory card that has the panoramic mode as part of it's processing capability! The latest Olympus brand normal sized XD cards (not the micro XD) do this.
The "almost perfect" issues?
The capture bit of the lens (clearly a camera buff!!) is housed in the top left corner of the camera, and even being aware of this, I have shots with my thumb/finger in the screen.
The in-camera panoramic stitch uses 3MP shots rather than 5 or 10MP so you can't have uber enormous panoramic shots for the wall, but it's still pretty kickass.
Other than that, this camera is great. I picked it up as part of a pack with a mini tripod, spare battery, normal sized tripod, etc and really have no complaints.
It's a total winner.
Customer Rating: Summary: Nice Camera but ................... Comment: I bought this camera as a tough point and shoot to take with me when walking out in the country, and on holiday.
I like the style, quality feel and features, and the water proofing and shock proof build I felt made it ideal for my purposes, plus I've always loved Olympus cameras (this is my third).
However the major drawback showed itself last weekend, out walking on a nice bright day the LCD screen was extremely hard to use, the image could not compete with the bright sunshine. This wouldn't have been a drawback, except that as with many similar compact cameras, it doesn't have a veiw finder.
This problem for me means that on nice bright days it's difficult to frame and take photographs, and I was very disappointed with the images produced. If it had a view finder I would have given this 5 stars.
I've ended up replacing it with a Canon Powershot, which is larger and not as tough (I'll have to be careful with it) but has a view finder.
Customer Rating: Summary: Photo Freedom Comment: This is the best compact camera I have ever owned. When I bought it I thought I would be making a compromise on image quality, features, size or something for the tough camera. But it is amazing! lots of photo options (light metering mode, white balance, focus, drive, etc). I am really happy with the quality of the 10 mega pixel images. And it has 3.6 optical zoom! Because the zoom is internal it is very fast too. much faster than my old olympus C5060WZ, Sony Cybershot, Cannon IXUS 910TI. I haven't deliberitly dropped or crushed it yet but I do regularly dunk it in the nearest river or lock and see what the pictures are like it works really well. I will be taking it trecking and diving in a few weeks so I will be able to give it the ultimate test.
I only have three we minor niggles with it:
- The full auto setting keeps turning on flash (the semi-manual mode is fine so I mostly use it)
- I can't change the zoom while videoing (Same with my C5060WS...very odd)
- It doesn't have a view finder, so even though it does have a fantastic screen that works fine most of the time, it is not as bright as the sun so sometimes I don't have any idea what the framing is like (I think this is the same problem with most compacts though).
Because it won't break, I bring it everywhere and take millions of photes, even dark pictures in the pub turn out well. You know you want one :)
Customer Rating: Summary: Olympus 1030SW - WOW Comment: WOW!
This camera completely exceeded my expectations. I have previously used Sony T series cameras (T3,T9,T200). Lost one, and the others broke, and kept having fault messages after six months of use. But the pictures I took were fantastic, and I thought they would be hard to beat, so when I saw this camera - drop proof, water proof and crush proof, well this had to be for me! I am a little clumsy at times and into outdoor pursuits, not a good mixture for delicate electronics!
I managed to pick one up else where (obviously a tad more expensive than here on Amazon) because I desperatly wanted to take one on holiday. The fact it is water proof is great, you can use it around the pool, for snorkeling on the beach, and as it is waterproof to 10 metres (I took it with us when my missus had her first try dive).
The camera itself is a good size to fit in your pocket, not bulky at all. When I first took it out of the box it really did feel solid and has a solid look to it as well.
The photos have come out really well. I am a total amateur when it come to photography, my ethos is snap away and hopefully there will be some werth keeping. There are 24 scene modes, auto and high ISO to choose from which seems a bit overwhelming, but worry not, the is a guide function which sets the camera up for you, just choose the options you want and it then puts the camera in the correct mode for the effect you want to achieve, or the conditions etc.
An excellent feature I liked was the panoramic feature, its brilliant! Basically you select the option in the menu, take the first picture then move the camera to the left or right (the camera automatically sensors which way you have gone), then a diamond appears on the screen and you move the diamond into the box it it automatically takes the next picture, do this again so you have total of three pictures and wait a couple of seconds and it joins them together to make a great panoramic picture, really impressive, and great if your into nice views. However you need the Olympus 'M' series XD memory card to use this funtion (and as I lernt the hard way you also need to format the card from new to use this function which is done in the settings), but they are only a few quid more than other brands.
In summary I have been really impressed with this camera.

Taking toughness to the next level
The µ 1030 SW is shockproof to 2m****, waterproof to 10m***, freezeproof to -10°C and also crushproof to an astounding 100kg**! No other camera is this tough. Even its metal exterior is scratchproof. Available in a choice of Platinum Silver, Midnight Black and British Green, the µ 1030 SW is always ready for action.
This model?s 3.6x wide optical zoom (equiv. to 28-102mm) uses an inner-folded optical path to protect the lens during high action shooting. A 10.1 Megapixel sensor delivers detailed images, while an extra large 2.7?/6.9cm HyperCrystal II LCD provides a wide viewing angle and a bright view - even in direct sunlight. Integrated Digital Image Stabilisation counters the effect of blur caused by shakes.
Face Detection Technology ensures human subjects are optimally exposed and in focus. Meanwhile, Shadow Adjustment Technology all but eradicates the problem of shadowy images. And significantly improving low light performance is BrightCapture Technology. Furthermore, integration of the TurePic III image processing engine enhances performance in terms of speed, colour reproduction and noise suppression to return more realistic images.
Operation is intuitive and with menus available in 38 languages the µ 1030 SW is almost certain to speak your language. For shooting underwater beyond this camera?s native limit of 10m, the PT-043 underwater case is also available optionally which extends the maximum depth to 40m.
