Customer Rating: Summary: You can buy better or even smaller Comment: There are lots of reviews on this cam on the web,so I will not repeat much of what others have said. The cam is full HD,small, like a 25ml drink's can and weighs little. It does not come with a case and Panasonic say they will not make one.If you want a case try this zoom lens case, Lowepro Lens Case 1N.
Performance in good light is excellent but it does tend to over expose a little, which can cause whites to lose detail, use of the intellegent contrast helps to some extent.
In poor light video noise does tend to increase and this will be made much more obvious when viewing the footage on a large HD tv.When viewed on a smaller tv or computer the noise may be acceptable to some but this is missing the point of having an HD cam/tv.Using either of the manual low light options increases the noise much more.Even though video can be taken in near total darkness the resulting video is not really fit to use.
Another problem I found, which I have not as yet seen mentioned elsewhere,is noise from the auto focus motor on the sound track, this is unacceptable on a camera in this class.
I can make no comment on editing or ease of handling files as I am returning the cam and choosing something else.
If you want something better, the Canon HF-10 is only a few mm larger and in reviews against the SD-9 out performs it in every way, especially under low light, but it is currently much more expensive.
If you want something even smaller go for the Sony HDR-TG3,which is about the size of many mobile phones.I would like both but can only justify having one.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sick to death of Mac users marking products down!!! Comment: If this is a great product, which it obviously is, then give it 5 stars, not 2 because it doesn't work with your niche operating system. The reason the rest of the world uses Microsoft is not because we love them, but we know that's the way to maximise compatibility.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Mac user's experience Comment: I recently bought the camera after much consultation and not much help or consistent advice about whether it would be compatible with Mac. Apple themselves said it would be fine but I would need imovie 08 which is part of ilife 08. So to my horror when I connected the Camera to the Mac and tried to import the files into imovie 08, the application just quitted repeatedly. Even copying the files to the desktop and trying to open them from there proved impossible. Apple and Panasonic couldn't help as there were no known issues. However reading the other reviews on Amazon I downloaded Voltaic and it easily converted the files to Quicktime which imovie 08 can see and import. It trebles the file size but you'll be up and running!
Customer Rating: Summary: Superb Camera...see here for Mac fix Comment: I'm writing this review really to point out to the Mac users that it works fine with Macs as long as you use http://www.perian.org/#detail as this fixes the issue at the moment. The camera is indeed superb and I agree with others that point out these people have knocked stars off the rating for the wrong reason.
Hope the info helps.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Camera - Doesn't Work Well With Macs Comment: I just wanted to reiterate the other review here. The features and quality of this camera at this price-point and size are astounding with 2 minor and 1 major annoyance.
2 minor issues: No HDMI cable in the box and you have to run off the mains when using the HDMI cable (the HDMI port is behind the battery)
1 major: Does not work well with iMovie or Final Cut under OS X. Currently you have to use Voltaic to convert from the source files to ones iMovie and/or Final Cut will read. Any attempts to go direct will either crash the software or leave you with a video file that plays back the video too quickly (when in 25p mode)- looks like an old Charlie Chaplin movie!
I am still very very happy with the camera. It would have had 5 stars if I could just import the video and it has been a known issue for over a month with Apple and Panasonic and no feedback from either camp.... It's even more frustrating that the HDC-SD5 is well supported by iMovie.

The HDC-SD9 offers full-HD 1920 x 1080 progressive recording (25 frames per second)** to capture images with a richness and beauty simply not possible with previous consumer camcorders. Users can record motion images with the kind of film-like quality enjoyed in movies at the cinema. Even though there is a natural conflict between high image quality and a high compression ratio, the 17-Mbps bit rate of the HDC-SD9 gives superb image quality and motion response, while its high compression ratio enables one full hour of recording onto a 4-GB SD Memory Card (in HX mode) at full-HD resolution. The model also introduces new features such as Face Detection and the Intelligent Shooting Guide, which make it easier to capture mistake-free shots. It also offers Panasonic's original 3CCD camera system, Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), and a Leica Dicomar lens - three technologies that team up to deliver full-HD images of exquisite beauty. Viewed on today's high-quality large-screen TVs, video clips shot with the HDC-SD9 are simply breathtaking, with vivid colouring, intricate detail and exceptional clarity.
