Almost perfect - 4.5 stars May 1, 2009 C. Fackrell (York, UK.) 165 out of 168 found this review helpful
This is my second TomTom navigation unit. My first was the original TomTom GO, which I gave to my father just over 2 years ago as the new company car I was given had a navigation unit in it. How I missed the TomTom! You miss the 3D-style intuitive display, the easy tap screen entry. Well, the new XL iq Routes European Edition is just great! It has a really clear display with a non-reflective surface, which is much better that the old TomTom GO shiny-screen.
The display is bigger and the unit is far quicker and more responsive to the satellite signals. I have noted some small map errors when I was in Edinburgh recently. The TomTom was trying to make me turn right into a road that was not there, it was 50 feet above me (North Bridge). I tagged the point on my unit (it says you can do this) with the intention of advising when I upgrade the maps on my computer. I have no idea where the 'tag' point went to? I browsed the map and manually advised but this feature is very cumbersome and probably not as intended, it certainly was not as I had inferred the feature. I will ask TomTom about this but the question is so obscure it may not be understood. But for this small quirk I would give it 5 stars.
I never use the voice for navigation or have need of a bluetooth link to my mobile 'phone (I use a Jabra earpiece), so those features are not needed from the product portfolio. This unit has no Bluetooth and if it had no sound it would be cheaper and for me better too.
The speed travelling and road limit on the bottom of the screen is an excellent addition.
I am yet to use it in Europe but all being well it will be as good there as here. The screen mount is wonderful, being both very solid and quick to attach and detatch.
I wholeheartedly recommend the unit. It is quick, simple, intuitive and accurate.
A Fantastic Piece of Equipment August 11, 2009 A. D. Gregory (Sandbach, Cheshire, England) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have never owned any other sat nav device (my wife thinks that a £3 map is far better!). However, my parents bought this as a birthday present and have been amazed how good the device is. It is VERY easy to mount (it comes with its own mount, so you do not need to buy one). Instructions and display are very clear. The maps are very accurate. It calculates routes very quickly and will recalculate route if you make a wrong turn (it does not simply direct you to retrace your path and then follow the original route). It uses IQ routes which means it will calculate different routes at different times of day (it has a database of how busy the roads are). I plugged it into my PC and updated the maps and added a few extra icons etc (this was very easy to do, however it takes about 1 hour to update due to large amount of data and NOT because the device is slow).
I recent went to Cornwall on holiday and the favourite destinations were incredibly useful. I loaded the post codes of all the useful places I would visit (The Eden Project, Lost gardens of Heligan, 24 hours Tesco, the campsite I was staying at!) and called them up when setting off. This made the journey free of arguments as the trip was quicker and the device was 100% accurate.
Since I have only owned this sat nat and have never seen any others in operation it would be unfair to say that this one is the best one out of the other brands on the market, however this is device has performed EXACTLY as I expected a sat nav to perform.
I have not yet used the European Maps, so cannot comment on accuracy. Next year I will go camping in France and will test the maps then.
TomTom XL IQ Europe Edition September 1, 2009 Kevin Jones (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is a great sat nav if you do not need all the extras i.e. bluetooth or MP3 player.
It is slim and attractive with plenty of map features and advanced lane guidance which gives you a clue on those more complex motorway junctions. Complete with Western European maps this makes it a good buy at £150.
Wide screen and IQ routes which TomTom say will save you money !!!
Using TomTom Home you can download the latest map share corrections and upgrade voices pointers and POI's.
I had TomTom sat nav on a PDA for four years and decided to upgrade to an all in one model.
I found an error on the map near where I live which has been on every TomTom but the type of error I could not correct (other minor errors you can correct and send to TomTom) so I made a note of the error on the TomTom and it sent the error to TomTom the next time I connected it to the internet simples!!
The only issue with this is that it you cannot add another map - for instance USA as the memory is not upgradeable and is pretty full with the western Europe map - although I am not sure if you can replace one map with another - looks possible

This is my first TomTom and it's great, easy to use straight out the box. Only had it a couple of days but I am very happy to give it 5 stars so far. All of the features look excellent to me, Advanced Lane guidance, wide screen, EasyPort mount. I am also pleased with the TomTom carry case, although I can see the advantages to the larger hard case, cheaper for a start, this one is lower profile and will fit in front pouch of my laptop case, marvelous.
Previous reviews give good advice with regard to completing a backup BEFORE starting any update via TomTom Home, just cancel the update and look for the Backup menu option, easy, note my backup took nearly an hour. I had no need for the backup though the update worked first time, less than 15 mins. I have a regular speed broadband connection, from other reviews I was expecting a much longer update time.
I would definitely recommend this unit. It is very well designed, quick, simple and intuitive.
Good thing October 13, 2009 G. Pasak (London) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
In a month I visited 10 countries - Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland. Always took me there where I wanted, didn't matter if the street was small or big. Can't imagine how many times I could get lost without this toy... It got crazy only 2 times but after a few minutes found a good way. Never had bigger problems with this. First I got it, I backed up device and updated - it took me 25 minutes with my not so fast internet connection. To be honest after I bought it I was a little afraid if I located my money right but now there's no doubt it was a good thing.
