Customer Rating: Summary: A good product, shame about the web-updater Comment: This is a good product with an intuitive interface. Unfortunately, there is no support for Internet browser connectivity on a Linux platform which prevented me from registering the product with Garmin. I found a computer running Microsoft Windows-XP and Internet Explorer; even after loading the sundry software packages and following the on-screen instructions, I failed to get the product registered and succeeded in erasing the internal operating system of the Nuvi unit. Amazon were absolutely wonderful and exchanged the dead unit with a replacement that they shipped to me overnight. Before returning the dead unit, Garmin gave me some instructions and software that enabled me to resurrect the unit, so I was able to return it working to Amazon.
After a couple of weeks using my replacement Nuvi, I again tried the registration process with Garmin, this time using an old computer running Microsoft Win2K with Firefox 3. This time I met with success and was emboldened to update the Nuvi operating system, install the latest maps as well as add a MAD map.
I reserve my harshest criticism for the convoluted process of registration and product update forced on us by Garmin. It should be platform independent via a web-browser in conjunction with a Java application.
Overall, the product is good and the Amazon customer service excellent.
Customer Rating: Summary: A fantastic product and very easy to use Comment: I bought my wife the Nuvi 760 and I was immediately bowled over by what a fantastic product it is. I decided to buy one for myself (it beats fighting over it with her) and ended up with the 770 simply because it was in stock. I am very impressed.
The Nuvi 770 is virtually identical to the 760 in every respect. It was very easy to set up; I never once had to crack the user's manual. It immediately acquired satellites, and hooking up my cellphone via bluetooth was a snap. Worked the first time with absolutely no hassle.
This unit is extremely impressive in its feature set, ease of use, and its user interface. I remember once renting a car and requesting a portable GPS along with it when we were on vacation. We never did figure out the strange GPS; it was too complicated and who wants to spend an evening with the user manual while on vacation? That could never happen with the Nuvi. The user interface is incredibly intuitive and I had no difficulty setting it up in minutes.
The bluetooth feature works great too, and you can use this unit as a hands free device for your telephone -- a nice feature in California where nanny-staters have made it a ticketable offense to hold your telephone to your ear while driving. Further, if you ask the Nuvi to navigate you to a point of interest (POI) such as a restaurant, with one touch of the screen it will cause your bluetooth cellphone to dial the restaurant (for reservations, say) while it is navigating you to that destination.
The unit acquires satellites very rapidly. No issues there. There is a screen similar to the one that Garmin provides for its marine GPS units whereby it shows you the actual satellites that have been acquired. Initially it simply shows you a bar read-out similar to a cellphone strength readout. However, if you press this bar strength readout icon for a couple of seconds, it shows you the detailed satellite data. We gadget freaks will appreciate this little menu, while more casual users will not be confused by it.
We have not tried the FM traffic alert system.
The Nuvi 770 is compatible with SDHC cards, so it can carry almost an unlimited number of JPEG photos or MP3 songs, if that is your fancy.
The fit and finish of this unit is second to none. The touchscreen is beautifully implemented. The case is extra money, but the price of the unit itself is so reasonable that I am not going to complain. Frankly, the days of struggling with roadmaps and crummy directions are quite literally gone forever. Given that one of these units costs no more than a few tanks of gas, there is no reason for anyone not to own one of these superb devices.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent GPS Comment: I bought this product after doing some internet research and was hopeful, but skeptical about the product. Two days after recieving it, I drove across country and it was GREAT! It did everything it said it would and was very user friendly.
Customer Rating: Summary: Issues and Issues Comment: Well, I got the Garmin nuvi 770 from my wife for Christmas. First off, I decided to go ahead and do the updates right away. Well, needless to say, big mistake.
-Locked all maps
-Blue tooth won't enable
Contacted Garmin about the issues, the tech was very helpful and supportive. She ended up getting the maps to unlock using remote assist. By the way, props to Garmin for using this, took away from a long process.
We went into the Blue tooth issue. Apparently with the 770 this is a known problem with enabling it and hanging the system up. After about 20 minutes of trying to replace files she determined it to be a hardware issues and recommended either sending back to amazon for a replacement or sending the unit to Garmin for a replacement. Decided to go with the factory on this one considering they where offering a new replacement.
Received an email stating that the 770 has been discontinued and offered me a free upgrade at no cost to the 775T. Well, I'm not going to complain, took that offer hands down, it was the one I wanted originally but wasn't paying the price.
For the unit itself it seems there is 2 problems, maps locking and blue tooth freezing. Other than that, great unit, but beware.
Garmin has great support and knowledge. Garmin also is paying for the unit to be shipped back to the company. Yeah, I may have to wait, but I am sure I will be getting a great product.
I would have to give Garmin a 5 star for sure once I get the 775T, but until then, I'll give the 770 a 1 star.
Customer Rating: Summary: GPS to Canada Comment: We purchase this Nuvi 770 for a gift. The people we gave it to love it. They used it in Toronto, Canada, and were able to get where they wanted and even find a restaurant they wanted to go too. Well worth the purchase. SUPER FAST delivery as well! THANKS!
