Customer Rating: Summary: a good basic phone and answering system Comment: If your needs are simple, this unit is a good solution. The sound quality is good, the handset is fairly comfortable, and the answering system works well. It is fairly easy to set up, though a lot of space in the manual is dedicated to the caller ID/call waiting system that only works if you have subscribed to such a service. The unit is compact, saving desk space, and using it is intuitive. The only complaints I have are minor. You can only record an outgoing message via the small microphone in the front (and not the handset), which has so-so sound quality. Similarly, you can't listen to messages through the handset, which is a problem if privacy is a concern. Finally, you can only delete messages while they are playing, so you need to replay them sometimes to do so. Overall, I am satisfied with this unit, especially at the price.

necessary and useful guide
does what it's supposed to with no fuss
Customer Rating: Summary: ATT 1856 - Not for wall mounting Comment: I purchased this phone to replace an existing wall phone and it didn't work out very well. The phone hangs at an odd angle when you reverse the bracket on the back of the phone to convert from desktop to wall mount. The base is at a slight upward angle so if your phone is higher on the wall it is difficult to see the caller id and keypad. It also causes it to stick out more from the wall. The marketing photo only shows it in the desktop position and it actually serves better as a desktop phone. The white phone I ordered also came with a black power cord which doesn't look good. A better option for a wall phone is the GE corded speaker phone with adjustable caller id screen Model 29586GE1 approx. same price. This phone hangs vertically and the caller id tilts for easy viewing.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Phone-Help for Handset Falling Comment: I recently purchased the 1856 and experienced the same problem the reviewer did as listed in the comment, "warning: when you mount it on the wall, the handset slides off".
Solution: the small plastic piece (less than 1"x1") located just under the handset ear piece slips out. When you slip it out, there is a small hook on one end. Turn the plastic piece around, insert it back into the phone base, and your handset will stay securely in place, even mounted on the wall.
The phone works great!
Customer Rating: Summary: pretty good spreaker phone Comment: The speaker works great so does the embedded mic. It's really convenient to have those three direct dial keys on the left side of the key pad. Now all my family members can call mine cell without remember them at all. The only thing I think it needs to improve is the display brightness. I can't see it well if the surrounding light is not bright enough, especially during the night.
