Summary: Good But Requires Special Discs
Comment: I purchased this DVD/VCR combo to copy TV and transfer VCRs to DVDS. Copying from VCR to DVDs is easy with no problems. The copying TV shows on VCRs is easy. HOWEVER the copying TV shows on DVDs is a problem. Using new DVDs (R or RW)and recording from TV, the DVD recorder stops time recording at ramdom times. You cannot be sure that the recorder will copy all or any of the TV program. I have contacted JVC.

BELOW IS JVCs REPSONSE
--------------------

I understand that you are having trouble with the timer recordings on your DVD recorder.

Recordings stop intermittently (timer, manual, or instant timer). In all three cases the recording stops at various times after recording has begun.

1. In Timer Record Mode the unit will
a. display "Recording file information. Please wait..."
b. then it will return to the on/off state it was in prior to entering the Timer Record mode.
2. In Instant Timer Record Mode the unit will display "Recording file information. Please wait..."
b. then it will display "Copy-protected. Cannot record."
3. In Manual Record mode the unit will
a. display "Recording file information. Please wait..."
b. then it will display "Copy-protected. Cannot record."

To prevent that problem JVC recommends to use a compatible CPRM disc formatted in VR mode. CPRM compatible DVDRW discs (VD-W47DU5) are available at www.jvc.com.
----------------

Basically use their special disk. Best price with shipping is Amazon.com at $16 for 5 disc. Hard to swallow.

I have not used yet. A search of internet shows my problem is not unusual and others have come to a similar solution. See Site

You may want to keep searching for DVD/VCR combo recorder. I cannot recommend this one.

Summary: Exceptional value
Comment: This DVD/VCR recorder is an exceptional unit in that it records DVD's, VHS, and has a built in analog and digital tuner. The QAM digital tuner recieves non scrambled digital cable signals which few other units can do. The HDMI output allows connection to a late model TV with PIP capability. The price in my view is a bargain considering all the features. My only trivial complaint is the fast forward search is too fast and overshoots the stop point repeatingly. A slower or fine tune search would be an improvement as would the capability to set the timer without turning on the TV.

Summary: DVR/VCR COMBO
Comment: JVC DRMV100B 1080p Upconverting DVD Recorder VCR Combo with Biult-in Tuner This has turned out to be a great buy. I didn't want to get completely away from having a VCR available for some occasions. However, I now have the tool needed to convert many of our family shots recorder on a vcr media to dvd. A good buy and very easy to set up and use.

Summary: Just say NO!
Comment: They wouldn't let me give it ZERO stars. I made two mistakes: I trusted JVC's reputation for quality products and I waited more than thirty days after receiving this little gem (insert heavy dose of sarcasm here) to actually plug it in and attempt to set it up. It freezes after anywhere from 5 seconds to one minute, so it cannot even get through the setup process, which makes it totally useless. Net loss: $250.-.
Stay away from this piece of garbage!!

Summary: Great value, but not the most user friendly
Comment: Upon doing the necessary research, I decided to replace a VCR only machine with one that had VCR/DVD dubbing capabilities and a built in tuner. The performance of the machine (dubbing,(non protected medium) playback, recording) to date has been quite satisfactory. A few reviewers mentioned problems they had with recording TV transmissions via DVD, with programs only being partially recorded despite properly setting timers, channels, etc.... I am one of those who experienced the same issue. (Though experienced none in VCR mode) I called the JVC customer service line and though they were quite patient, they were not able to assist me in solving or diagnosing the problem. Having said this, I found that reinitializing a re-recordable disk prior to every recording session has solved the problem so far. Hopefully this is the definitive answer to the problem. My other complaint is I empahtically agree with a few reviewers that this machine's menu is not intuitive to operate, the instructions don't adequately cover various steps required to navigate operations successfully and will take a very patient individual to invest the time to master this unit...once this is accomplished, you will be happy with it and find it a great value.
