Customer Rating: Summary: The best I've ever owned! Comment: First, regarding the anti-Gateway poster's comment, since he/she has the identical post for a variety of Gateway products featured on Amazon, I'm not sure he or she had hands on experience with this model. In any case, almost the first thing one sees when you unpack this model is a clearly written notice stating that 1) a restore CD does not come with the computer, and, 2) if this is an important factor for you, you are advised to make a restore CD or DVD as soon as you get the system up and running. For me, with this unit, the absence of a restore CD is a non-issue since the latest Windows restore process automatically creates restore points as you set up and continue to use the system. I had occasion to use this process once and it worked fine - as good as if I had a restore CD.
Regarding this system, WOW! It is the best I've ever owned. The fastest, smoothest running, and highest rated (a Windows Experience rating of 5.9!) computer I've ever used. From a full shut down status, it starts/boots up in less than a minute. From sleep status or similar, it is ready to go in a few seconds. It plays the latest software, like Mass Effect, more smoothly than Windows 98 played solitaire.
Finally a quality manufacturer is offering a put together system with specs that meet or exceed the build your own systems; and is offering the product at a price that beats the build your own systems by - at a minimum - several hundred dollars (maybe more). As a sophisticated computer user, but not a technician, I give this model my highest possible recommendation. It is a lot of fun to use!
There are some issues to be aware of; including getting better speakers and a 5 button mouse. Another issue for some folks is Windows 64 bit versus 32 bit systems. For me, I like the power and speed of a Windows Vista 64 bit system. I've had no major software compatibility problems so far. In fact, some programs that wouldn't run on my 32 bit Vista system seem to run fine on this system. However, for those with concerns or problems, the computer does come with a 32 bit installation CD so the owner can use whichever system she or he prefers; and allows one to switch back to a 64 bit system when you are ready for that. Again, this has not been a problem or issue for me, but I've read about those with this concern.
The biggest problem is simply trying to find and buy one once you are ready to make the investment. Over the better part of two weeks, neither real nor virtual stores could help me. Trips to several Best Buy, Circuit City, and Office Depot stores, with staff at those stores also searching their company's data base, produced no results and little likelihood that a different result could be obtained in the foreseeable future. Working demos were on display at Best Buy. But, no product was available. Trying to order from Gateway's or Best Buy's websites wasn't much better. No unit was showing up in the system for several hundred miles. One warehouse had one unit; but it would take a week or more to get it to me.
Then, on a whim I stopped at a BB store in a different part of town. I found a sealed box unit sitting underneath a display model. I grabbed it and checked out ASAP; mentioning on my way out that according to their own company's database, the unit I just bought didn't exist. I have been one very happy camper ever since.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: I must say that the J and R vendor made amazing time on the order. We had it expedited, and it arrived less than 48 hours later! It works well, with blazing speed. The video card is nicer than I have personally experienced. My only problem so far is the Windows Vista 64 bit issues with software, but those will be updated with time.
The computer is very quiet, and the graphics are great. It is a great deal if you are into media or games.
