Summary: Exellent GPS for a great price
Comment: This is my first GPS and I think I made the right choice. What I was looking for was a wide screen and TTS. Got both for just over $100. Even though this is a refurb there is no way to tell that it is anything other than brand new! I updated the software including the most current map (v8.15 as of 12/3/08). So far the routing and timing is perfect. Today on the way to work I heard the traffic report and selected the part of my route with traffic and told the unit to avoid it. I was quickly (less then a second) rerouted to get off the next exit and take back roads the remainder of my way to work. This is the exact route I would normally take when there is heavy traffic. Routing is very quick to calculate and rerouting when I make a wrong turn is very quick too. So far I have no complaints and probably never will.

Summary: worst GPS i have ever owned
Comment: i have owned several GPS units - 2 garmin, 2 magellan, and this tomtom. this unit is by far the worst one i've ever used. the menu navigation is unnatural, the screen layout is terrible, the colors are awful (all combinations!), the bluetooth would not work with my iphone, the maps were old, the POIs were useless to nonexistant, the online updating was a NIGHTMARE!!! even it's physical shape is not as good as many others. after a week of trying to make the best of it, i gave up. ended up returning it to amazon and ordering the magellan 4250. the 4250 came in today and is MUCH MUCH MUCH better at the exact same price. the only advantages that tomtom has over the magellan is the ability of the tomtom to download user created voices. there may be some other but i'm not into goofy stuff...i'd rather have something that is easy to use & reliable. much better off w/ a garmin (my other vehicle has a nuvi 200w - more expensive but nice) or the magellan 4250 (same price). hope this helps you make up your mind.

Summary: Accurate maps
Comment: I used the unit on a 1500 mile round trip from Tallahassee Florida to Louisville Kentucky for the week of Thanksgiving. There is information on installing the TomTom Home software which is on the hard-drive/RAM within the unit but nothing about charging. This software on the device is a cool feature for marketing but not very practical in that the software automatically search and updates itself upon loading it on a computer. My question is why take up the space on the internal memory of the device when you can use a small batch install program similar to that used for I-tune. If this was done, there would be no need for a series of install and then update to have the latest version. The ease of us is great however there is one item that was missing in the "Quick-Start" guide and that is how you charge the unit. Thankfully I have an Ipod and deuced that you charge the unit via the USB but there is no information as to how long it will take to charge. If you already have an Ipod AC/DC adapter it will work to charge the unit without a computer. Another complication is that the unit is never truly off. It does state this in the "Quick-Start" guide. Similar to the Compaq Ipaq when the power is off the unit draws power from the battery. What this means is that the unit from full charge will drain the battery in approximately 72 hours. The TomTom home software allows you to easily backup the favorites and other information from the unit to the computer which can be restored and anytime from the computer. Note that the first backup will take considerable amount of time for me on a Dual AMD core machine it took approximately 45 minutes. The maps are amazingly accurate and show you when and where to turn. The text to speech option however sometimes gets confused between telling you to run right or left when the map and actual road shows otherwise. The unit allows you to use human voice for the speech and even download voices from the TomTom site or use one of your own. The issue with the human voice is that it does not speak street name or addresses only basic information like turn left, turn right, take the freeway etc. Only the computer voice on the unit can do all the functions of the Text to Speech. There are other nice features with this unit such as weather warnings and traffic updates but they can not be used unless you have a blue-tooth enabled phone. As I do not have a blue-tooth enable phone I do not know if the blue-tooth enable phone also has to be internet ready or if the TomTom XL-S uses the phone like a modem to some central TomTom server. At any rate if these features are used I expect that air-time on the phone will be used so be mindful. Overall the large touch screen, features and ease of use make a great first timers GPS navigation system.

Summary: Superior value
Comment: I had been considering purchasing a GPS navigation unit for quite a while. I don't need this device everyday, but it is handy to have when traveling away from home. I even tried using the service offered via my cellular phone carrier, but found it was sometimes unavailable due to network coverage issues.

I took my first long distance driving trip using my new TomTom over Thanksgiving. The unit performed well. It did have some issues with street name pronunciation, but I've noticed that with just about any computerized voice. The only time I had a problem was on a heavily cloudy day when I did not let the unit sync-up to the satellites before I began driving down the highway. It could not lock-on to the GPS signal & was unable to provide routing information as a result. However, once I stopped & waiting a few minutes (less than 5), the unit synced up & everything worked again.

Summary: Wrong product sent as XL-S but was XL....
Comment: This product did not speak the street names as advertised. The replacement had the same issue. The box and instructions indicated it was the XL-S model; but the actual product was only a ONE XL....

Too bad as the price was right.

Editorial Reviews:

The TomTom ONE XL-S is the high end of TomTom's ONE line of basic portable gps navigators. It adds text-to-speech functionality to the ONE XL's gorgeous widescreen, 4.3-inch display, expanded traffic options that include GPRS- and optional RDS-TMC radio-based real-time traffic information. The TomTom ONE XL is a complete portable GPS vehicle navigation device with an incredible range of features. While it does not have the same array of luxury features as TomTom's GO 720 or GO 920 line, the ONE XL-S offers all the features you need in a solid navigation system. The ONE XL-S has all the features of the ONE XL, but also adds text-to speech, which allows the device to give spoken directions with real street names.
