Summary: can not recommend because of ink factor
Comment: I purchased this printer to replace my old Canon bjc3000 printer that recently died after 8 years of faithful service. It was slow and noisy, but the printing quality was outstanding for a printer in this price range. My wife and I enjoy the hobby of photography. Friends and family were amazed at the prints we were creating on a home printer. Another aspect of this printer that I enjoyed was affordability of the individual ink tanks that I was able to purchase on line for under $4 a piece. All of this is why I decided to purchase the iP4600 when I found it on sale at Amazon. It is much faster and quieter than the old bjc3000 but even with all the advancement in printer technology over the last 8 years it is hard to tell the difference in quality between prints made on the new printer from prints made on the old. I was shocked when I went shopping for ink. Very few stores carry replacement ink tanks for the iP4600, none in my area. I can only find a couple of sites on line that carry them and the cheapest price I've found is $14 a tank!!! I can't vouch for the reliability of this printer because so far I have not printed enough to know. I have been avoiding doing much frivolous printing out of dread of buying more ink at inflated prices. I truly regret purchasing this printer and my advice to anyone shopping for a new printer is to research the price and availability of ink before making your final decision

Summary: I love it!
Comment: Beautiful photo printing. Prints well on CD labels, but not on the actual CDs like the previous model did. Other than that, I love the quality, ease of use, and Canon customer service.

Summary: Replacement printer
Comment: My only complaint about this printer is that it doesn't print on CD and DVD blank disks.

Otherwise, this is a truly great low-cost photo printer in the great tradition of Canon printers. It replaced an Epson printer, and I couldn't be happier.

Summary: ok photo printing, horrible black and white text printing, slow, expensive ink
Comment: This printer is very disappointing. I replaced a very old Canon BJC-8200 and the old printer was better in every aspect. The ip4600 is very fast once it starts printing but it takes a good 20 seconds to 3 minutes to start printing. The printer will move the print head around while you wait for it to start printing. It does this every time. Sure the stats on Canon's web page make this seem like a fast printer (it is only after if finally starts printing). The quality of color photo is about as good as my old bjc-8200 and the quality of a text document is far worse. I am amazed how bad an MS word or excel document looks (worse then a 15 year old inkjet). Also, the colors in the print are always way off compared to the actual photo on screen. I have tried every adjustment. Ink is also very expensive. You will spend much more on ink then you spend on the actual printer. It is a horrid printer overall and I would never recommend this to anybody.

Summary: Great Printer But There Are No Off Brand Inks Avail so it is expensive
Comment: It's a great printer. Easy to set up and faster than its predecessors. Prints great color,B&W and photos. However, the ink tanks are smaller and hold less ink so they have to be replenished more often and currently none of the off brand suppliers have the ink in stock so you have to buy Canon. My wife and I each have a printer since she does a lot of printing to advertise our USCGA Boating Safety classes with colored posters. She bought the IP4500 several months ago but it was not available so I bought the IP4600 thinking that they would have the same ink tanks but no they do not so we now have to order our ink separately adding to the expense. Other than that, I love the printer.

Editorial Reviews:

Print photo lab-quality 4x6" borderless prints in 20 seconds. The Canon PIXMA iP4600 Photo Printer's 5-color ink system - four dye-based inks and a pigment-based black ink - produces vivid colors and bold, black text. You replace only the color that runs out, rather than a multi-color tank containing unused ink. Print head technology creates beautiful, long-lasting photos with resolution up to 9600x2400 color dpi with droplets as small as 1 picoliter for spectacular photo detail and document clarity. The two paper trays let you store both photo and plain paper, allowing you to automatically print 2-sided and save on costs. Quick Start lets you power up in seconds, and the Auto Photo Fix feature corrects red-eye and enhances your images. ChromaLife100+ system delivers vibrant photos that last up to 300 years. The two paper trays let you store photo paper in one, plain paper in the other, so you're always ready to print either photos or documents. Plus, you can automatically print 2-sided to save paper. Just one of the features on the included Easy-PhotoPrint EX software is Auto Photo Fix, which optimizes your images for such factors as skin tone, white balance and brightness, and makes red-eye corrections.
